The technical side of things is largely independent from the content and target audience. You're basically providing wheelchairs for able people, just because it's a great idea for cripples.

i think the real problem is not that pouet bss is useless, but that pouet is the number one scene portal.

it'd be so great if a serious portal had the guts to take away people's attention from the funny things at pouet. maybe we could spend effort to make scene.org more 'community based'.

the suggestions in this thread are nice, but pouet is too old for a radical change. so... how about not using pouet for real discussions? ;)

There -ARE- other scene forums where you have moderation. People don't seem to use them in the same manner as here.

Pouet Bar Brawl Section is where I go to get drunk with my friends, punch some trolls, and be generally not so serious about things. Sure, you CAN have a serious conversation here, but it's among the other conversations.

I use other places (asciiscene, bitfellas, occasionally scene.org) for niche/serious conversations.

I like the BBS as it is, now - it does have landmines all over the place but it's fun seeing who survived the last explosion. And I'm not really seeing the benefit of 'cleaning it up' - other than 'let's enrage the trolls!' which gets boring after a bit - ok, no, what I mean to say here is "Been there, done that, it's a lot of work and no fun and ya know... fuck that shit, let's make demos."

Finally, something we can agree upon.

On second thought, I guess I agree that the BBS is pretty nice as it is. I do think people trying to overload my browser by repeating the same image 10k times in one post should have their BBcode privileges removed, but then again, that'd only make them create new accounts. Same thing if it turns into a democracy.. that only encourages trolls to create fake accounts. The trolling isn't too bad after all, and I fear that our trolls are sufficiently immature that trying to control it will only make it worse.

Also, think of the kittens.

I've done an off topic system at scene.se which does just what scamp initially asks for. A button you can press as the topic starter or moderator to mark the message as off topic. It does this via AJAX code too so no reloading of the page, just marks the message red and off you go.

Even added to this is that if the message is new to a user it will be shown that first time and never afterwards, but that's something one could code as an option.

i think what is wrong is pouet.net bbs is that people dont see potential of it. you always say "yeee pouet.net bbs sucks we use other bbs but pouet is scene central and scares away newbies becoz bbs" THIS BBS HAS POTENTIAL IF IT WOULD BE MODERATED. just like comparing to demos... demos could be funny scroller but then it could be some fucking asskicking life-changing experience. so why not RE-DO this fucking bbs alright?

wtf? That is a joke, right? Nothing works on indymeda. It is one biased place where everybody with the slightest bit of critique is brandmarked as a "nazi" within seconds.

And for the record: No, I am not a disgruntled indymedia "nazi", i never posted on that site.

Like Truck or someone else above said, Pouet is Pouet because of its unique free spirit. Sure it allows for more trolling but pouet trolls at least know when trolling is appropriate and even when they troll in so-called "serious" threads they keep it minimal and even then it usually has good comedy timing. people giggle (or not if youre anal) and the serious talk continues. no harm done.

pouet is like some kind of funky stream of consciousness expression or something where people just say stuff without great thought and it sometimes leads to interesting comments. you'd totally kill that if you started restraining people. even a litlle moderation would send the a subconscious msg: THINK BEFORE YOU POST. it wouldn't be the same and it would definitely kill a lot of the atmosphere around here. That would be a big mistake

Ok, I am partially taking back my statement about indymedia.org. I just checked out the site again, and it did indeed improve quite a bit.

Nevertheless, I still believe that this is not the right system.

i'm all in favour of the moderation system as long as it can be switched off by default...

...because then it will be at least as successfull and commonly accepted as the "fakeuser" qualification or p01's ignore script! ;-)
