scene.org takes whole folders off

category: general [glöplog]

A few weeks ago I wrote them that the Assembly99/anim folder is empty for a couple of months now and there seems not to be a change either. Now the next folders got cleared (such as Assembly03/assemblytv + seminars). I have not checked it more but that is really scaring. I already offered them to provide 'em a new harddisc, but I never got a reply to my offer. Everything they answered was 'yes, we deleted the content of the anim folder'. Man I love the scene even if I live it more for myself only. I bought myself a new HD and started mirroring scene.org until they start deleting everything there. Just like ftp.futurecrew.org, do you remember? Without any warning, they closed their server about 1.5 years ago. Is that the future of the demo scene? I know they tell on their main page that they are out of space. But I don't believe this since this message appears there for about four months now. Each server mirroring their content is also missing the files they ripped off the archive. I am very disappointed but what can I do if they don't accept help?

Does anyone here already saved the complete scene.org archive? I mean it's not that big. The whole archive is not more than a little bit about 40GB now. An there are already 180GB discs out there.
I also checked their archive for viruses. Only found 2 Klez.h's and two others.

Gruss,
Sir Dan

1. the whole archive is at least 60gb.

2. and the seminars have been taken offline until we buy the necessary harddisk.

3. and the anims from 1999 were deleted a long time ago due to having the party or some other big party going on and being of a far highest priority than those anims.

when 2. is done, anybody will be able to upload 3. back if desired

Dear Sir, we thank you for your kind support for the free service we've provided you for many years and would sincerely like to apologize for any inconvenience our recent temporary moving of older files to a standby server in order to accommodate latest party releases has caused you.

You see -- our non-profit organisation rely on donations from kind individuals like Yourself to keep our storage space going.

Luckily we have now been able to purchase new hardware thanks to our kind supporters out there.

Expect the releases back online soonish.

Regards,
VelluV
Scene.Org Staff.

It's a good sign that scene.org is taking whole folders offline. I'd hate to think they were doing things in halves.
del ftp.scene.org/*.*

oops =D
Funny, but scary. Since scene.org is basically the only big repository of the modern demoscene, I'm not exactly jumping with joy over the notion that it all might pop out of existence due to financial problems or data loss.

shifter: i wouldnt be too worried about that if i was you. there are always people willing to donate for HD on such a cause like scene.org, its a big comunity, its relativly easy to find financial supporters.
and if there ever is data loss there we have the mirrors, would be easy to recover.
you can go back to finishing final version of tpb02 now and stop worrying about these kind of things ;)

First of all, the final of TPB-02 is out of my hands. Sorry.

Second, I was musing more along the lines of unnoticed bitrot. If something gets overwritten in an absent minded moment and mirrors have updated by the time someone notices, wouldn't we have a fucking brilliant ballgame? The ballgame of *evil*? (No, I'm not at all informed about the backup and mirroring scheme scene.org uses, but I like nightmare scenarios) ;)

Thanks to the one who already re-upped the contribution to the Assembly'02 seminars folder.
This is just one file though, if you have more, please up it to scene.org, I'm really in need for the whole content of the Assembly'02 seminars and assemblytv folders.

I got also contacted by someone who would lend me a DVDr with the content of these folders, but I don't know if the will work or not. There wasn't any news on this recently.

Thanks,
Dan

Assembly is going to make a DVD available of all the content: releases, seminars, etc.
