typography in demos
category: general [glöplog]
it's getting harder to find out if a font in a demo is created from scratch or ripped from a free (or not) font gallery. for demos that look utter crap in content other than the text, it is fine. but for better ones i'm getting confused since noone writes credits for fonts anymore. i won't "hate" the demo instantly if i found out it uses ripped typography, i still can rate the skills of putting it into the overall design. for oldschool productions fonts are often credited. So should it be the same way in modern demos too (instead of just telling "graphics: bidi" or "design: budu") or do you think it doesn't matter since they shouldn't be ripped at all?
(specularly: yes, i'm talking about those white on black or black on white neo-artsy fonts.)

comic sans!
system
topaz!
Maali: greatest font crime ever :D
They are all ripped.
Except you can't call it ripping, the fonts were made to be used.

Graphics: Anonymous Microsoft Graphician.
pixel fonts are sooo 1991 =)
Indeed fonts were made to be used, but the creator should be credited.
Hornet wins! \o/
Preacher: careful now, calling all fonts part of the M$ LOL license is like admitting you are just a OGL line tutorial whore.
Parapete: I can't wait for you to credit whoever made tahoma just so I can slam you for the font alternative I use for web pages using tahoma.

you can use fucking helvetica neue and get good results. its not about font anyway. use it with style. get inspiration from graphic design.
I happened to see The Gangs secret special weapon once: comic sans scroller with dynamic character length for C64!
Do you know any good program to make ttf?
I've stolen the bitmap font I've used recently from miffies:

Asked this person for permission, but didn't get any reply :/ So yeah technically I'm a bad bad person and I will burn in the southern layers of the Intellectual Property's hell .

uns3en_: Sorry can't agree fully on that. Typo IMO is essential to give a graphic design the best touch, especially
in demoproductions that, in the end, hail from a very text focused origin. So I think it's very important to either create custom fonts or make a wise decision about what font to use in which size (!).

lets just add it to the shitlist along with 3d graphicians who dont hand-pixel the entirety of their textures (shock horror), musicians who sample records, coders who use paul bourke's site for reference, people using 3d hw apis rather than doing a software renderer from scratch and all the other "sinful activities" around.
(you know, that list that everyone who updated their opinions since 1993 takes precisely 0 notice of.)

On the amiga, I used TEC's blitter line-drawing routine AND I NEVER TOLD ANYONE!!! MUAHAHAHA

Oh yeah, this discussion finally sinks to the point where fonts are the new cracktros! \o/

o_O ... don't get it ... cut the gingerbread dose

demos, in my view, ARE very text oriented.
Credits, Greets, cheesy scene poetry, you name it.
Do these informations not deserve to be provided with well designed letters, now do they?
I didn't rant like "fuck all prods with non drawn font". It's quite ok to use fonts from provided libraries, but when one picks a font, proportion and the right size and style should be considered, right ?

And that's where the discussion basically ends. The demoscene mostly appears to be a large set of bipolar elitists with a say about every mundane detail (myself included).
I consider typography very essential, but not the cornerstone at all. b10 has such great fonts, for instance :)
unfortunately, b10 is a bad example :)
if you like fonts so badly, go read a bloody magazine
