Help IDing an old DOS game

category: general [glöplog]

Hi all,

I need help (so the Dr.'s keep telling me).

For years I've been remembering bits of an old(ish) game I use to play.
It was nothing revolutionary, but I remember having loads of fun playing it.

It was a DOS game, from around 1992 or 1993 (give or take a year).
A space shooter where you controlled your little ship by setting the rotation, then applying thrust (ala the old space war).

You flew around looking for your opponent, and shot at each other.
You may have also dodged asteroids, but I can't remember 100%...

When you picked the skill level of the other player, you were presented with photos of various people. Darth Vader was one of them (the hardest level I think).

It also featured Jester's 'Stardust Memories' as the soundtrack.

It was a shareware game (maybe even freeware), and traded quite a bit on the BBS's.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
It's been popping into my mind for years, I'd love to play it again. :)

I guess the game ATH500 posted isn't the one hd was looking for.

The description hd gave reminds me of "Asteroids". That was a popular arcade game. There have been a lot of remakes of it, most of them free- or shareware. I guess you'll find what you desire by googling for "Asteroids".

ath500, why exactly are you posting a link to a agi game of yours which does not include any asteroids, spaceships or rotations whatsoever?
At least not until the point where i stopped playing which was here:

Maybe you mixed up the links, here is the correct one:
SpaceWars!

@hd
Perhaps the game you're looking for is "AstroFire".

solar winds?
Cheers for the reply's.

SpaceWars is very similar. The game I'm thinking of is definatly based on it. Only done in VGA, a large scrolling starfield play area, and I "think" the Earth and Moon could be found when you fly around the playing area.

There was a little "radar" in the bottom of the screen that showed the location of your opponent as well.

And of course, Jester's Stardust Memories playing in a loop from the moment you load the game until you quit.

Adok, I do remember AstroFire, however it's not the game I'm thinking of. Same era and top down style though.

It also supported GUS, I'm 100% sure of that.
So that would date it around 1992 to 1994 ish. due to the GUS coming out in '92/'93 and Stardust Memories being written in '92...

Maali, I also remember playing SolarWinds, with it's Adlib soundtrack. Classic stuff!

Thanks again for the help!
I'll post a screen shot / link if I ever figure out what this game was called! (maybe I've imagined it... in that case, I should make it) :)

You're probably not looking for winroids.

Cheers everyone for the help.

I finally found it!
It was called Thunder Zone by Kurt Kennett.

You can download the game here: http://www.crysania.co.uk/games.html

I completly forgot it had modem / LAN support as well!
