Ubuntu & the demoscene
category: general [glöplog]
and I know, this is pouet. fuck pouet!
So you didn't read the pouet.net bbs disclaimer ;)
And there are people interested in it. Actually, this thread has already more meaningful postings than most other pouet threads will ever get. You can't get anywhere if you already stop when some people call it bullshit.

I can tolerate it, but I just won't bother anymore here :) Probably there must be a forum with respectful and educated people somwhere.
but hey, don't worry about me, keep talking about it, i just won't read anymore :)
I would prefer to eat my own shit before doing anything for Ubuntu for free.
Come on, don't be such a drama queen and concentrate on the positive comments. Don't tell me you didn't expect any trolling :)

I've had Linux (single boot) on my computer since last October. When I return to Canada next weekend, it'll be time to make a decision on whether or not to keep Linux, or just reinstall Windows.
Regardless, I'm not sure I want a "boot-tro" or "install-tro." As it is, I keep my boot-up as basic, and as silent, as possible. However, it's interesting Mr. Shuttleworth has at least some awareness of the demoscene. What this means in the long term is anybody's guess.

who ever reboots? ...these intros are pointless if you never see them ;)
A transcript or recording of the talk would be good... the article is kind of useless.
I'm not too hot on the idea of supar scenish bootup, as it seems kind of pointless... but getting sceners to contribute to things like screensavers and UI themes would be good.
I think this is more attractive than doing it for windows, as your work would be included by default in the OS.
Screensavers are really easy to write, just a standalone executable that paints to the root window or goes into fullscreen mode, the screensaver daemon handles the rest. Infact, i've even used actual demos as screensavers before without any modification.
Doesn't mesh well with the idea of a demo though: most of the screensavers should be written to use little CPU.
You can do all sorts of things with the theme engines out there, but most people associated with OSS projects are absolutely tasteless when it comes to design... some injection of talent there would be nice.
But... that kind of stuff isn't really scenish. I'm kind of confused as to what he was aiming at.

pouet bbs version:
"so what ?
longer boot sequences ?
isn't it long enough ?
no thx
kbye"
politicaly correct version:
"i'm sorry mister but i'm not interrested in watching a rotozoom that would make my boot sequence take more time in the end."
in the end, i said the same thing in both cases.
the "pouet version" was not that rude, seems that "kthxbye" upset you.
i didn't call you a moron for having ideas. MY words were not offending. on the contrary, YOU insinuated that I AM a moron that is not able to code anything.
please you don't know me. for sure you don't know what i'm able to do or not codewise.
between you and me, in this precise case, who "cares about having a bit of respect about the people talking here ?"
i think the truth is that you only believe in your own stuff.
if you can't stand the fact that people may disagree with you, don't suggest anything anywhere.
isn't it what you decide on your own blog ??? stop blogging because people didn't agree in the comments ?
come on don't be such an emo...
and also, i don't expect you to have enough education to apologize

You can turn the screensaver off and it really doesn't make a significantly longer boot sequence if it's not an ubuntu lavalamp. ;)
well there are several projects whose were advertised with scene prods, and sceners, OS/2 and GUS are two examples. Both of them went down the drain.
So Ubuntu people better run away while they can... :)

I think it's likely that if he's successful in generating enough interest, there could be some competition and prizes involved. It'd be like another platform and format with different constraints, and not necessarily very unsceneish.
256:
you're mixing things.
I can perfectly tolerate people that doesn't think the same way I do. I can't tolerate people that doesn't think the way I do and say what you say is rubbish, or no thanks bye, without even trying to put any argument on the table. Those are the non-educated (or pouetized) ones from my point of view. What annoyed me is that, stefan which I can of know a bit, just said in one line what he was thinking about all this and didn't put any argument, I was expecting something like that from him, but not to me to be honest. And I just don't care too much about all that, I guess I should just stop using the bbs without saying so, and nobody will call me emo (which again, I don't care).
the blogging/logging thing isn't the same than this (tho it's starting to be as I'm writting this). I jus felt that whatever I was saying it wasn't useful for anybody, and I was spending a lot of time to make my point clear (again, I can tolerate that the people doesn't think as I do), but I can't spent that many time trying to explain my time to a couple of people and then end up feeling that I lost my time. And I know that some of those people understood the point and thought it was a good thought, but.. still.

and no, I won't apologize, as I don't think I have any reason to do it, you know perfectly why I said to you what I said.
I think it's best to filter out the silly provocations and ignore it. No amount of protesting against crap is going to make it go away (it probably feeds it actually), so it's better to trust that others are ignoring it too and just get on with life.
anyway.. I like the idea. The demoscene is a major reason why I never switched away from Windows (also, encountering fundamental graphics problems in Linux.. simple things like how to sync to vsync reliably on any machine). I'd like to switch to it if I could.

i can clearly see one: you somehow said that i was an uneducated moron unable to code which I find very close to the lack of respect you tried to denounce :)
again, you said i was just a moron while i just said that i was not interrested in having a longer boot time sequence on ubuntu
YOU are mixing things
YOU are mixing the presentation and the content
YOU are mixing what i said and the way i said it
i'm sorry if you felt personnaly attacked by the "pouet way of saying it" but for sure this was not a reason to be disrespectful towards me
glad to see that you still write here though :D
also i hope you'll be accepted on forum with respectful and educated people somwhere.
all this to point that you behaved exactly the same way as the people you criticize

trace, stop trolling. by only acknowledging those who belittle your posts you are directly ignoring those who added something meaningful to the thread. so, you are in or you are out, but stop bitching.
gutmenschenlinux
fact is: linux has enough (good) coders, but not enough graphicians... most of the gfx used in linux apps were made by coders :)
SPiTe: You're right, I didn't want to extend it that much, but I wanted to anser 256, I don't want to follow his game anymore. So I'll stop bitching, sorry about that.
trace be cool. it is easy to write negative comments. let me demonstrate:
crap lol, linux users small balls.
some people also have positivity-inhibitions. that is, although they have no opinion, or even _because_ they have none, they need to write something - but it can't be positive because that would let them appear weak and caring - like mothers. and they rather want to be motherfuckers.
therefore, just ignore the lame stuff. read the constructive parts. majority of sceners are lazy cocksuckers anyway. just look at the count of recent productions.

256, as frank zappa said "insults are a good way to get your point across faster".
my point is that you are a moron. 10% of boot time is cpu related. most of startup time is related to drivers waiting for device i/o. that has been said on the first page already.

this is not right, especially if you start daemons the parallel way... example here (not mine)... booting can be cpu intensive (by loading daemons etc parallel, as said before) and also by using a cache system like fs-fcache which gave me a nice boot time of 28 seks on my old machine :)
