Nintendo e-Reader
category: general [glöplog]
Are there any demos for this platform? It seems that this would be an almost perfect onbscure little demo platform.
It's size-limited - an e-Reader program must fit into a piece of paper with a dot matrix system.
The programs are being run on a GBA CPU, in one of three possible modes: Native ARM, emulated Z80 or emulated NES. All modes have an API to work against. ARM code can additionally do access GBA hardware freely. Z80 is a custom virtual machine with a (limited) subset of the Z80 instruction set. NES mode seems to be an emulated NES, but with bugs.
I'm sorry if I've described something wrong, I'm all new to the e-Reader.
So, does the e-Reader have any demo potential? I think it'd be fair to treat it as a demo platform on its own, since its not really equivalent with NES or GBA.
It's too restrictive. It's hard to find. But it's a nice idea too.
Other thing: can you print it with a regular printer?
Probably doable but where to get one?
Wait, you're saying that it should get it's own demo platform because it loads the shit into memory differently?
So, what, we get a whole c64 tape demo category now, versus disk demos? Oooh ooh wait I have a new hard drive for my PC, let's open a new category for demos that load from SATA drives!
Yes, it was an interesting marketing gimmick, similar to baseball cards being used to sell absolutely CRAP bubblegum. There are faster, better ways of getting your shit loaded into a GBA.
Oh, and, it snaps on the back of the goddamn GBA, so it's NOT different hardware - it's running the freaking crap on a GBA. We have a GBA category. Basically this is a flash cart that uses a printer rather than CF/SD cards.
By all means, reverse the loader, print out your GBA/GB/GBC color demo as a barcode and load it in... but NO, it's not a fucking new category.
Oh, and Donkey Kong Jr NES was on 5 cards. Need more memory for your demo, print another card. Not exactly size limited. Annoyance factor, when card 3 of 7 swipes wrong, very high.
