Pirate Parties (political)
category: general [glöplog]
In Austria, recently a new political party has been founded. It is called "Pirate Party of Austria". Their aim are:
- Change copyright laws: legalize private copies for non-commercial purposes, forbid DRM, decrease the protection duration to 5 years after release
- Protect privacy by abolishing EU stock data storage
- Reform of patent systems (trivial and software patents, medical patents for the 3rd world, ...)
They want to run for the national elections on October 1st. In order to be eligible, they still need to collect 2600 signatures from Austrian citzens of all Austrian provinces. That's the legal barrier new political parties have to take according to the Austrian law.
According to their website, similar parties exist in Sweden, Australia, Belgium, Germany, France, UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, and the USA. The website of the Austrian parties contains links to the websites of these other parties.
What's your opinion on this? Is it worth supporting?

Bunch of silly imitators, stealing away the swedish pirat party's idea. I say sue their asses. They're not even able to come up with their own ideology.
OF COURSE - LONG LIVE P2P !!!!111

And isn't the idea of the pirate movement to copy?
I'm sure Knos' statement was pure irony.
Adok:
it is not
i think warez scene groups should just release thru p2p because its safer than topsites and more people would get releases. pirateparty is great idea. (if you didn't get irony then fuck off)
Privacy issues and consumer rights are important but I honestly don't think that "one issue" political parties like this are worth supporting, especially when they have such idiotic names. (pirate party wtf?)
tribao: I don't think so. I'd rather vote for a party that has only a few, but clear aims compatible with my desires, rather than for a party which plans to implement 100 changes, of which a few would be beneficial for me, while most would leave me cold and some would perhaps not be so great for me at all.
unfortunately when a one-issue party gets into power the population suddenly realises that they have more than that one issue to deal with. Often the policies on the other issues are ridiculous or non-existant, but that fact is hidden because of all the hype and effort put into promoting the one-issue.
Woohoo, the pirate party got into powaaah and now we can download juarez!!!!oneoneonerobisoriginsofthebass111. Screw healthcare/education/defence/economy, we can all use emule!
I'd expect a mensa level scener to understand that ;)

There are actully political parties in USA? Wow!
They call themselves "pirate party" as a provocation, but actually their concerns are about more than just piracy. It's basically an anti-copyright party.
I've found an article about this matter written by a Dutch university professor. He basically describes how the original idea of copyright got perverted in the course of the centuries and what benefits a society without copyright might have.

@defbase
I don't think they'll get to power anyway :) But in contrast to the UK, we have a proportional voting system in Austria, so smaller parties have a chance to enter parliament and there they can raise their voice or maybe even form part of some coalition government.

WHERY INTERESTING ARTICLE - I WASNT AWARE OF SUCH SINGS AS COPYRIGHTS, AND I THOUGHT ONLY A FEW PEOPLE ACTUALLY HAVE A COMPUTER IN AUSTRIA. YOU OPENED MY EYES. THANLSK ADOK. I WILL RELEASE AN ISSUE OF HUGI TOMORROW ON MY OWN CAUSE AFTER READING THAT ARTICLE I FEEL MORE ARTISTIC THAN EVER.
AND I THINK THEY SOULDNT MAKE A BIG FUZZ ABOUT ALL THAT. AFAIK AUSTRIA IS A SMALL COUNTRY SO I DECIDED THAT ITS OK FOR EVERYONE TO COPY ANYTHING THEY LIKE. TELL IT TO THE OTHERS AUSTRIANS THAT ITS OK FROM MY POINT AND YOU ARE NOW OFICIALLY ALLOWED TO DO SO AND STUFF.
BUT IT MAKES ME VERY SAD, THAT YOU DIDNT ANSWER MY QUESTIONS. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU CAN ONLY ASK QUESTIONS. I THINK THATS NOT FAIR. YOU ARE NOT MY IDOL ANYMORE.

I am earning my money by creating software patents. Without software patents, I had no job. I love software patents.
Maybe someone will start a Demo Party.
Whose goal will be set on establishing demo-cracies. Demos ruling the nation. Isn't that France actually.
