Thinkpad = Solid but it will get to hot and fuck up your graphics card = artifacts.
Thinkpad? Hot? Can't confirm.
hp nw9440 ? you can get refurbished around 500 eur.
I've never seen a Thinkpad overheat before. Maybe you tried one with a busted fan?
That said I'm not too sure if Lenovo kept up the high build quality after taking over from IBM.
I have a Medion Akoya Mini... I think this was given as a gift by the bank, or something :)
@psonice: after further testing, I can say that the viewing angle is bad from below, but ok from above and pretty good from the sides. However, typically you don't stare at laptop screens from below :)
Just a small update. I bought the Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG and am very happy with it. It is the older model with the Radeon 5650M that has (according to some reviews) a better screen than the newer models that have a Radeon 6650M GPU...
I also sent the laptop to a company (http://www.tdcomponents.com/shop/displayschutz_laminierung.php) to add a anti-reflective coating to the screen, which works really well.
The keyboard is a bit loud, but good to type on and has all the important keys I need for coding.
For 700-800€ (+ 50€ for coating the screen) this is an awesome machine.
Jsyk.

Oh. Get a version with a built-in 3G modem and add a SSD to make it almost perfect... ;)
