Scene.org Awards 2011
category: parties [glöplog]
I dont really see any problems with the nominees. But I do not understand why there aint an equal number of nominees in each category. Maybe in breakthrough achivement and most original concept that can be understood. But in 64k, 4k and technical achivement? and why is there 10 in publics choice? oO
You can still vote in Publics Choice, that's why there's 10. It's the 10 best of what people voted for in the preliminary round.
Cool! That's a great idea.
ah, so 10 will become 6? and then? back to the jury?
I thought I'd just clarify a few things, since some questions seem to repeat themselves:
- The Scene.org Awards crew and the jury are not the same group of people. The crew consists of Scene.org organizers + helping hands (from the parties involved with the physical ceremony for example), while the jury consists of people not necessarily affiliated with Scene.org at all (basically the goal is to have one representative from each country, but that's unfortunately not always feasible).
- Members of the jury are not allowed to vote for a prod they did themselves participated in making (and yes, this is checked by the head of jury). Contradictory to popular belief, it is not an advantage to be in the jury if you think you have a chance of winning an award :)
- The voting is calculated using the Condorcet method - a proven way to avoid "friend-voting" and other types of typical vote cheating. The vote is done in different stages, where the first round consists of adding every and all prod that might be eligble for nomination, casting a vote, discussing the results, having a second round of votes, a second discussion (see below) and then the final round of voting to determine the winner.
- Some categories have more or less nominees than others. This is a direct result of using the beforementioned voting method, as there are sometimes very small gaps between the top 5 (which is the norm) and the 6th prod. Other times there are huge gaps between the top 4 and the 5th prod. In those cases, the jury has a discussion about the list as it stands, and the result of this (supervised by the head of jury) sometimes results in the listing of fewer or more than 5 nominees for a category. This year was one such year where a lot of the categories has 6 nominees.
- The "Public Choice"-voting was changed this year to have a two-round system: in round one, everyone could vote for any prod out there (as long as it was released in 2010), leaving the top 10 voted prods for the second round, where everyone can vote for their favourite amongst those (right up until the ceremony itself, making the vote more interesting).
Hopefully, that clears up any confusion. Oh, and yes, I almost forgot: the jury is (as always) paid by the Norwegian Oil Ministry which funds the new world order known as the Nordic Conspiracy, but I hardly need mention this as it's common knowledge to most.

Thanks for the clarifications.
I think you should make it more clear on the website that there is a second round for the public choice (right now, if you had already voted for the first round and don't login again, you may think you haved voted for the final choice).
Also, what about the animation category ? Too few

wullon: there should definitely be a clarification about the second round of the "Public Choice" voting. With regards to the "Best Animation"-category, I'll leave that for the head of jury to comment on - I just wanted to clarify the practicalities, I don't comment on policy.
is there a real Oil Ministry in norway? just like in iraq? coool
Gloom, who were in THE jury this year?
and the jury is announced after the fact to avoid outside pressure.
but i've heard haohmaru accepts payments in dollars, euros and plain gold!
How come no one voted for Ceasefire for public choice?
It's much better than Chariots of Fire...
And no SATORI for best effects! :(
kinda borring to watch that it's the same demos that get nominated for each category.
one may argue that they are the best in their ranks - others may think some has been left out (such as satori, mfx, united force, playpsyco)

It will be a relief not winning one of these this year. They are heavy and they take up too much storage space as it is.
Yeah, def sad to not see Satori in there :(
And no kewlers ;_;
@gloom: to each person complaining, send them an invitation to the 2012 jury team ... of course, you have to tell them what is actually asked to any jury members
I guess a random usual email from the jury newsletter would make most of them disappearing mysteriously and never whine again after the scene awards nominations.

Archmage, than its About time andromeda returns with à new demo! Ad Astra ad infinitum! ;)
knl: Not unrealistic, no :)
magic: dear lord man, give it a rest..

The lap dogs of the magisterium, eager to please.
i'd only like to make a point that not putting any of slyspy's demos into best direction category and putting there half of what's there now is showing that this is something really wrong with this year's jury or with condorcet method or with what you guys think direction is.
good with discussions about nominations - i'd argue that 90% of the movies winning at the Oscars are mainstream drivel. And so the world turns and the science and the arts are advanced through discussion and development.
It's all good and you cant win anything :)
