unfinished projects
category: general [glöplog]
not sure we have such a thread already - a place were we can drop screenshots or links to unfinished demos/intros/graphics and stuff that will never be released cause the project got aborted. it often happens that the concept simply doesn't work, or you get tired of the thing, or whatever. drop here those projects you that you never finalized.
and I start, of course with some sketches of 4k exe procedural images. i found them all uninspiring, so i abandoned the thing before it was too late or had wasted too much time. they range from 2008 to 2010.
raytracing
raymarching
raymarching in a distance field
it might be a bit of a spoiler for future releases, cause you can spot what kind of ideas i was playing around, but, meh, still better here than lost forever in my harddisk.

@iq Why you showing your balls here? Those screens are all worth being developed. And you just dumped that?!
Well. I guess ya have 'better' things to do. Nah. This' no good.

Yeah, my jaw dropped on the latter two as well. I think they're worth developing!
iq is too good for himself.
The grass on the bridge image looks great, the water not so much.

The first one is definitely not good for your current expected level. The second one starts to look good, but, as is, it doesn't look very different from ixaleno and/or elevated -- even if it is.
The final one looks more promising, but I'm thinking you definitely need some kind of art direction to reach a new level. Now I expect from you a good visual composition, like an elite photographer would do, and also I would love to see something with meaning and not just a beautiful technical image. I know how hard/difficult it could be in just 4kb, but... you are the best in your area, and I definitely agree with you that it is not worth releasing something does not reach the level you are expected to.

texel, you nailed it. the first one is pretty old, 2008. the second was a tech test in "slope based cone raymarching", from 2009. the bridge-in-vietnam is the last, but i dropped it exactly for the reason you mention - complete lack of direction/purpose/composition. in fact i spent long time (like two weeks) trying to find a nice lighting/framing and stuff before i would continue developing content (the idea was to make the bridge old and grow some ivy on it and stuff), and polishing any details. but i didn't get anything interesting! it was very frustrating. so, lesson i learnt: next time i will find a nice idea before i start coding.
I hate to go after IQs stuff, but just in support of the topic. Here is Lux Aeterna final which I'll never release. I think there are some bugs in the dithering oh well..
It's still a gazillion miles better than any of my unreleased gfx stuff (from around 1995). Nice thread, although a little demotivating for us mere mortals :)
I'd love to see the 2nd shot (big landscape) in realtime.
this is what happens if you are like the best and have to beat yourself !
theres just no way to do so !
i would have put em in em states they are into any compo, and i guess they would´ve won !
i myself doing only 4ks so far ( atleast on PC ) never dump anything, i just release it...one doesnt have to win all the time, just release whatever you got and so you havent wasted time at all :p
those gfx.exes deserved better than just being shown as jpg in some thread at pouet !

hardy is right. its better to release sth, even if it is not going to win, (sth that is invalid in your case ip) than to leave it die in a corner of your hard drive...

Meanwhile, here is an old experimental soft body engine I gave up on:
It never did much but torturing smash = endless fun.

And here is an old teleportation experiment gone horribly wrong:

Not really scene related, but anyway. I always wanted to write an emulator (which is why I wrote Oricutron), and one day I thought it might be fun to invent a computer and write an emulator for it.
I created a fictional 6502 based machine, and started writing an emulator. I got the basic video ouput going, and then started on the ROM. I wrote most of a BASIC interpreter before I gave up on it:
(the colours are in bands because that is a 2-colour mode and the paper/ink commands are rapidly changing the two colours, rather than a different colour for each "Hello pouet! ").

A 48kb fun group-birth-tro for MsDos, 2001, in glorious VGA mode. The interesting part was, perhaps, that the font was generated from a pattern of circles and lines.

"iq, the most hated coder"
Nice idea Xeron, what was the spec of that fictional machine?
I actually was working on something similar, but it never got further than specifications.
My idea was to create an alternate-reality mother-of-all-8-bit machine, containing only hardware that would have been able to be produced and sold at a reasonable price towards the end of the eight-bit era (late 80ies or so).
I had the CPU, memory specified and started dreaming up a video-chip with some nice gfx modes and HW-sprite capabilities.
I abandoned it since I don't know enough about 1980ies hardware manufacturing to figure out what would have been possible or not!
