Just wondering because well... seems like there may be a lack of computer scientists around in some countries.. or people in general arent attracted to the challenge and reqard of making a demo i guess.
Programming isn't easy.. but that's beside the point cause life isn't easy..
So what do you all think would bring a surge of new people to the scene and an entire new generation of blood to the scene? there's got to be something.. but then again if the scene was mainstream we wouldn't be unique..

you should start writing for diskmags on how to save the scene and become utterly mad when people just ignore you. mental problems are definitly a bonus to get the proper attention.

Like.. Well.. If it was dead, do you think there would be a shitload of parties organized? Do you think we'd all be here talking crap and sharing jokes? Why would it need to be revived or whatever? You're surely from some kind of country where internet is available once a year, because it's seriously all but dead.

don't worry, as long as gaming platforms will stay over-protected there will be a scene :p

Save the scene - make a demo. That is all.

Time for me to introduce an idea I've had in my head for ages and will probably attract flaming:

Computer science students are the most likely potential sceners ->
Most computer science students run Linux ->
Demos on Linux = ultimate demoscene outreach!

Demos need to look good ->
Most people using Linux have no sense of style or design what so ever ->
Demos on linux = sucks!

parapete, it's more interesting from the point of view of a computer science student to develop opensource applications than to make demos.

After watching BP08 demos and intros for the 50th time, i get a feeling it's more alive than a couple of years ago. Or rather those who are still alive are very much so

gloom, excellent constructive criticism, well done. The demos don't necessarily need to be made using Linux, but if someone does an OpenGL demo there's really not a whole lot of excuse not to do a port or have someone else do it.

Gloom has leading! In order to make stunning stuff on linux, you must have people which are more concerned about graphics and music than editors, build systems, lawyer stuff and porting to a zillion platforms.

So .. Priority list for linux demo
- Sound
- Graphics / Design
- Code that works well on the compo platform (impossible to get past if you use linux).
- Win compo
- Continue with linux attitude after here

If you find yourself doing :
- Editor wars
- Build systems
- Licences
- Documentation
- Porting ( apart from running on the compo machine. )

Admitting the AMD/ATI gfx drivers would be decent someday (haha) i would go for FreeBSD instead, Linux is a mess.

anything else that you can imagine as worthy of being opensource (in economical terms) is not a demo.

hint: If you want to have your linux stuff watched, try to make your demo opensource and available on the common package managers databases: so that searching packages with words like "demo" or "demoscene" make your work visible. I remember have tested one demo was available with the ubuntu 's thing on a fresh install.
