How does one get started in this here "scene"

category: general [glöplog]
I dont see any tutorials on how to be leet, i have experience coding java, php and c, although my c is shameful. All of this stuff looks really interesting but i dont even know where to start, can you guys give some hints, pointers, starting points?

I'd say install a C++ compiler, have a look at general Windows/Linux/MacOS/whateveryouuse programming, have a closer look at either Direct3D or OpenGL, find out what FMOD does, refresh your math skills and there you go :)

i'd say..

Do your programming in Visual Studio or Code Blocks (http://codeblocks.org/) (i recomend Code Blocks but i don't know why)

Then, start playing around. And don't give up during the first three weeks!

General C++:
http://cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/
http://www.mindview.net/Books/TICPP/ThinkingInCPP2e.html

SDL: (to set up a window)
http://www.libsdl.org/

OpenGL: (for graphics)
http://nehe.gamedev.net/http://www.libsdl.org/
http://www.humus.ca/index.php?page=3D
http://developer.nvidia.com/

FmodEx: (for sound)
http://www.fmod.org/

Now, go pouetize some threads with cats/timbaland/sparta-pictures and don't forget to laugh at your classmates in java-class the next time you see them!

Congratulations, you're now 'scene'!

also, i think it was Adok/Hugi who compiled a list of demos on pouet that have their sourcecode avail as well.. you can prolly find that list in Hugi. (preacher/traction e.g. tends to release source code quite often, so if you're interested in rendering GL_LINES all day go check that out :P)

sowwy for the hugi spam! :(
Getting started in the scene by coding is painful.
Download some tune from shakira or britney, play it at double speed, add a distorted bassdrum and cowbell and, with proper pouet spamming, you'll become a scene rockstar.

start with something simple. look at other peoples source code, and figure out how the code works. It's all building blocks i guess.

thats how i learned to code badly on c64 years ago.hehe

the biggest thing i guess for me, was learning about interrupts.
nice tutorial in german:

There are numerous starting points that have been offered in diskmags and in seminars. Check the Assembly and Breakpoint seminar pages for some good examples.

Then, pick something, try it, and keep at it. Have fun doing it.

And most of all: try to digest fully what kb said.
also go to a demoparty if it's possible for you.

What uncle-x said. Are you from the UK Evan? (If so you might want to come to Sundown in early September *plug plug*, but deffo try to go to a big European party too if possible).

Yes! go to a demo party and meet other people who code or make music or whatever and learn from them. It is much more fun learning by talking rather than reading.

1) Go to a demoparty;
2) Make a demo.

And if you're going to a demoparty (say Solskogen), bring some food! You might find (as i did) that they only serve beer at the party (like they did on Solskogen), and even if it is possible to survive a weekend on beer alone, you'll very likely end up not remembering anything from your first demoparty. (as i did).

It's not fun to wake up on the other side of the country figuring out that people there know you while you cant remember any of _their_ faces. =O
