born dead projects that would have ruled the world

category: general [glöplog]
I remembers those killer demos / intros that were planed / started and were droped for some reasons :
Here are some of them :

- a demo with haujobb and some other guys called Mindview
- a coop demo with fairlight for BCN 04
- an intro with haujobb called stream

hoho, i remember that bcn demo project.

our biggest one has to be a 64k we originally planned for assembly 2003 but didnt finish. it was kindof a disaster movie in 64k, with a city getting messed up by earthquakes and tornados and a tidal wave and stuff. really big project.

we then competely remade it with new tools for bp2004 but failed to release.. i worked on it up until just before the introcompo deadline but it probably needed another 24-48 hours on it. then we aimed it at assembly 2004, ended up remaking a large amount of it, and again missed the deadline - again needed about 24-48 hours.
oh, and i think we tried again for tum2004, but not so seriously.
then we ended up just scrapping it and doing something else - after over a year of one project it gets pretty tiresome. :) poor reed ended up making the tune 2-3 times, heh. and maali the 3d, too.
anyway, the upside was it pretty much pushed the development of our introtools, which were used on future, more interesting projects. :) oh well. the stuff's all on one of my harddisks somewhere.

there is this effect that I am revisiting almost every month since 2002 and I still can't get it right. I don't give up hope though.. maybe one day...

Yeah, there is the World of Vodka thing. The Chinese Democracy of the scene.

And I seem to recall one other as well... ;)

Back in 2000 we had the idea of a 64k first person shooter using our new intro technology. We wanted to have network play (so there is, uh, a point in playing it instead of watching it for 10 minutes, saying "ooh! aah!" and then forgetting it like the other 100ß things one has seen on YouTube), nice level design and all that. Then "suddenly" a few years later it all went into the wrong direction :(

Not that Chinese Democracy ever would have ruled the world, though... :P

Tai-Pan's final vectors! Probably never really started though. ;)

And who could forget Broken Promises?

Fish & Chips #5 from Sonic was announced a few years ago by Stargazer, haven't heard anything about that since. Was it just a joke?

We made something called "Cosmowave Trailer" with Orion, in order to announce a trip hop musicdisk that never went out.

It would haven't rule the world or anything else, but it made obvious that trailers suck.

Damn, all these unfinished masterpieces lying around! How about an 'abandoned demo' compo at BP next year, only long-abandoned but runnable demos allowed?

Also, it would be a lot more interesting to know what was planned for these prods, and maybe why they were dropped, rather than just "we were gonna do a demo.. but didn't" :)

I recall Exceed planned to make a demo called "Berlin" back in 1999 or 2000. What has become of this?
