Final versions

category: general [glöplog]
Seems to me that when a final gets released (and it can be months or years after the prod), it needs announcing somehow. Doing that in the news gets nothing but flames, adding it as a separate prod gets more flames, and announcing it in the prod's comments means theres a 90% chance most people will miss it. So how about just adding an announcement in this thread?

aight. good idea.
let me be the first.

And now, the unfucked version:

I'd like to see download fields like [final] and [win32 port] on the product pages because this is sometimes more worth than adding "new" prods.

Anyway, to fill this thread a bit:
[Checkpoint] intro from Obnoxious and SDi (ok, Mekka '98).
[Point Blank] from SSY.
dont see why ppl would flame about it beeing advertised in the news... i would be happy to register that ppl are cleaning their bugs atleast, as long as its not abussive spam...

WHY THE FUCK EVEN RELEASE "FINAL VERSIONS"???
Do a demo, do it properly, release it. So you missed a party?, so what! Release it when its finnished anyway.

The scene is turning into Microsoft free software foundation, with all these halfbaked releases.

not all demos are finnished!!!
theres no final of follow the sign3/(B) or twin peaks/trsi, so they should never have been released? that would have sucked..

in case someone hasn't downloaded it yet:

update to planetloop final (radeon fix)

no final, only a request for the prod itself: [Ethernal Worlds by PASTel]. dl is broken, there aren't any mirrors, website returns 404... If you have it, upload it.
iblis: it's been like this since almost the beginning of the demoscene, so why change it?

@unlock- not the scene i have been part of since 88-90.

stop this whining - if someone want's to make a final version of THEIR OWN DEMO, it's their bloody fucking right to do so.

Just like it's my bloody right to be annoyed with spending time downloading unfinnished stuff. ;)

then don't. :)

Arghhh,...mate...the point being that most of the times, people doesnt make it clear that it's unfinnished untill the thread starts going. And then in pops a link to a final version.

I think the only example i can think of where the final was WAY better, and not just fixing a few compability issues here and there that should have been fixed before release, is candytron. In all honestly i though the party version was dull, and flat. The final on the other hand, was a completely different intro. and man...that was a final i was actually happy to see :D

I totally agree although I'm willing to release a new version of "kings of the playground" for fun someday ;)
Too many rushed/slapdash demos. Candytron was a good example of a useful final version though.

Totally wrong. And even it were true, that wouldnt be a reason to keep doing it and encouraging it.

keops. yes but that is another pot of tea. To do a remix or remake of a production (that IS finnished and released) is not nessecerily a bad thing. So i strongly encourage you to do so :)

Psilocybin remix was a good example of this.

here i guess our opinions differ. :) i think final versions are a good thing because they fix compatibility-issues, texture-bugs etc. small and not so visual things. i don't believe a final-version (like the one of candytron) is a "final" version at all, i see those as remixes. if you make -major- changes to the content of your demo/intro, it's not the same demo/intro any more.

Tell me about that scene, it sounds like an exciting one. Ah wait, no it doesn't...

Witness the magic that is Humus or Triage? ;) Whether it's a final, remix, remake, teapot or whatever, is still up to the people who made it.
