Hello all
I was wondering - what do demoscene folk do for a day job?
I've just managed to get work authorisation (I live in the USA, though I'm a european) and I'm wondering about what to do to earn some monies.
I remember speaking to a few people at Revision who worked in medical scanner research - computer vision and reconstruction and what not. It's something I'd love to work in.
But I know that lots of folks work in games, and it's possible to be a freelancer and go down the indie route. I know at least one person who works in the mobile space, making camera applications.
I'm trying to find a good idea I can latch on to, preferably freelance. I've run my own business before but it would be nice if graphics could tie in to that. I've worked as a research software engineer for a time, so I'm familiar with HPC and getting close to the metal (like the demoscene), so I wondered what folks here spend their work doing.

as for me, i work in the online adult industry (don't laugh) as CRM manager / online marketing (primarily email now). i did all sorts of stuff, from customer support leader to copywriter or PM / online product owner / product manager.
i can't code a line but i can translate ideas and requirements between overly visionary CEOs and geeky tech leads very well, it seems :)

apart from being a hobby, making music is a side-job.
and very occasionally i do UX consultancy or copywriting. i was peeking at SEO but didn't quite start with it and given up.

in early 20s i did some casual day-jobs sometimes, like stuffing a hangarful of feathers into sacks we have sewn, or ripping nylon cover off of thousands of adult magazines (for one day, it paid like ~20EUR, we blew it off on booze that night. fun times)

on paper i am - among all - a sound technician.

The best paying c++ job I can get.

game audio, sound design, music composition, blah. game audio frameworks in whatever frameworks. audio integration. audio compliance. now: audio plugin development.

also, yeah, c++. best evr.

Part time mobile game dev in C++ (mostly graphics nowadays), part time management. At EA, so I’ve definitely sold out :)

Senior programmer (around 20 yrs). ERP development for Windows, Android, Linux in C++, C# (.NET+Mono), Java (+Struts/JSP), PHP, Javascript.

No one in any real man job (me neither since ages)? Adult industry is borderline though, but would require "different placement" in production.

Game testing QA (main), graphics, audio/video editing at the moment. Before that Graphics UI/UX and audio/video edit.

Last time without computers was a short period of 3 months in '94 after graduating :)

During the day I remotely fix routers, switches and other network infrastructure, most of the time by sending engineers over. During the night I build, operate and rent out lasers, lights, beamers and other houseparty-related equipment for my own company. One of these days I'll trade my dayjob for my nightjob for obvious reasons.

I'm a postdoctoral researcher in computational space physics. Simulating the plasma flows in near-earth space on supercomputers.

So realistically, most of the day consists of cursing at bugs in some italian supercomputer, that only occur when using more than 100000 CPUs at a time, with no suitable debugging tools available.

Kinda like coding on Amiga, really.

did a couple years freelance / digital artist (sound, interactive installations) / smartphone apps

now just focusing on whatever i feel like doing next week, including an attempt to become a pro esports player on a mobile moba, managing my record label, streaming/hosting game and demoscene related stuff, random videos for youtube, creative writing, drawing, performances and other random digital artist stuff. some small consultancy role to help pay the bills.

Currently C developer (I'd much prefer C++, too) and working in telecommunication related projects (DMR radio devices, satellite modems, and more or less related stuff).

I've got about 100 SQL Server databases that I yell at pretty much all day.

Front end development for a national broadcaster. Before that java/front end development for various employers, and before that again tech support for a telco/isp.

Music is a side gig and huge money drain :)

Its neither the most challenging nor the best paying job but as a network technician it makes me happy to see the data flow :)

I run an online record store

Back in the days backend and frontend, then only frontend for some bigger regional sites.
Currently back in the ad industry, making sure that video ads are correctly played in videoplayers in europe (kinda in everything that isn't youtube).

I'm a technical product manager. Before doing product management I used to part-time develop software and iOS apps next to studying. (Until I realized that my passion is more on the planning and organizing side of things)

I sell potatoes and sometimes onions.

I run a lighting store. And when I have some spare time (what's that?! :D ), I still try to make some music.

I worked as electrician in a coal mine 1600 meters down in the dirt. Too bad they're closing end of the year :( Got a new job as automation programmer.
