Too many levels of irony for me, although I commend the production values and effort. Admittedly, including an another demo in/from the compo was a touch of genius.

Raises the bar for jokeprods. The moment when the reference to the previous compo entry kicked in, everyone around me just went nuts. Respect :)

Let it be known that this demo uses kusma's excellent mpeg artifact shadertoy code (which we ruined) and that we set the record straight with him after the compo and drank his beer. Sorry!

damn i was hoping for sp05 right there!
i dont think i completely got all the details and references in this yet, but its way less offending than the kevin entry (which also really isnt but yeah, opinions...) so im wondering why the downthumb posse is at it again... namevote maybe? ;P
Counterthumb, by any means!

The frame rate and the visual design of the framing story leave a bit of a bad taste against the impeccable sound design and tight direction, but hey, a prod with a point to make - what's not to like?
rulez added on the 2018-04-06 22:19:47 by Gargaj Gargaj
@gargaj: you're absolutely right of course. This one is not built to run well on slow machines. The render loop in some parts just runs way too many Lua instructions and our specific VM is not particularly fast running these instructions (but very excellent when it comes to interop with .NET). We've done benchmarks on various VMs and profiling on our current tech and there are no low hanging fruits left.

That's not the end of the world though since I'm excited to go hybrid soon. I'll work on integrating C# scripting now for future releases to prevent this specific bottleneck and we'll see how it goes from there.
added on the 2018-04-06 22:54:35 by Paralax Paralax
gargaj: you got a point there ;) I'm still catching up with current engine tech. For now we got one (!) point light, relatively simple shadows, and the ability to render reflection cubemaps anywhere in the scene. Shading is classic phong, and everything still 8bit per channel. The only thing that looks kinda good is the volume light tracing, which is why I overused it to death.

As paralax said, the central problem was that our lua interpreter is too expensive. Mint lua in c++ is about 10x as fast. The whole scene graph lives in lua, and traversing it multiple times for shadows, reflections and hires zbuffer destroys performance completely while the gpu is relatively bored.

As soon as we'll have this covered, next on my list is improving the lighting (more than one point light would be awesome!), probably switching to hdr, a basic pbr shader... the obvious next steps for achieving higher visual fidelity. Not rushing the models with my amateurish skills (I need content now!!1) but instead letting blockbuster create proper ones might help too ;)

Sidenote: "raytracing testtro" is the actual test scene I used for developing the new features...

Massive sensory overload. Me somehow likes. Don't know why. @Paralax, why bloat the future with C# scripting? Bloat it more and go ChakraCore or build in jsrt api!!! Low hanging performance fruit without years of rewrite.
rulez added on the 2018-04-13 19:35:43 by EvilOne EvilOne
@EvilOne: don't you worry buddy, I am a trained professional. We'll merge the optimized IL right into the player binary on export to give it that nice lean finish we all yearn for. For all means and purposes that's much closer to hard coding an effect than what we've done until now ;)

When the slide appeared, I told my friend: "Ok, either this is going to be awful, or either it's going to be genius". It was the latter.

The amount of effort and attention to detail you put in what may look as just a joke prod is impressive. I enjoyed it very much during the compo, and still enjoyed it at home, while noticing various additional elements and meanings. The mise en abîme in particular was absolutely brilliant.

Solid thumb.

Zavie: Thanks a lot! Also for pointing out that "mise en abîme" is a known thing. It's one of my favorite techniques which I used several times in all kinds of prods, in more or less meta ways. Exploring self-referentiality just keeps intriguing me, imho it's one of the most interesting concepts to convey deeper meaning.

I've seen the commented version on YT first and confused that with the real thing (which would be amazing and so much higher on the WTF scale); There's sure some space left to make everything more meta next time. Only the pouet comment fixiation some demo makers have (do thumb-downs really hurt your feelings that much? I'm not trying to be cheeky here, it certainly stings a bit to make something with love and get ignorance back...) is a bit irritating and feels a bit overblown.

(wertstahl's intern comment cracked me up.)
