@evilpaul, yes, it is always a problem to capture something like this properly. I just uploaded 50Hz video onto the Youtube; it should give a fairer representation of the resulting visuals (watch it in Chrome as HD video). Sadly, when not in HD, Youtube simply drops every other frame, which is just a disaster...
It goes without saying that this demo is a lot less flickery on a 50Hz monitor, but somehow, I kind of like the kind of flicker you get on the 60Hz monitor too. Gives it a kind of a quicksilver sheen.

@__sam__: A mixture of the two. A low-pass filtered global volume is used for less important variations (e.g. the radius of the ball is based on it). More critical, "structural" variations (effect and palette switches, animated "beats") are kicked off by the hand-written script.
