a brainblasting demo by HOLOCAUST
featuring (as usual) overscan, hardscroll, heavy precalculated stuffs & generated code

it rocks!

Really nice demo, pictures are also very great (manga style)... HOLOCAUST Rules !!

not completely bonkers about manga, but the fx... argghhll! there are fx in here that come awfully close the some falcon fx. excellent, definitely. a shame holocaust is less known than other groups while they can easily compete with them. read: kick their ass!

I think I couldn't run this..
added on the 2004-01-30 12:59:08 by Optimus Optimus
Oh yeah. And I know what you mean, earx. After about the fifth time in two weeks I loaded a demo into SainT and said to myself "Wow, who did this?", I finally realized Holocaust is one of the ST masters. They ought to have been better known.

Just one of the reasons I get my ST out from time to time.

Does anyone know anything about the second tune played in 'Blood'? The end credits say the music was by Big Alec, Mad Max and Tao, but I can't find it in any of their folders in the UMD 8730 demo.
added on the 2005-04-27 02:29:09 by crusader crusader
Found it! Reality by Big Alec of Delta Force. As played in Blood, it's missing the first 10 seconds or so... Either that or the YM file in the ST-Sound Pleasuredome collection is buggy.

Yeah, just you coder!
Watch this via emulator, and you'll see when properly coded demo does not need any custom chips. Zappy is the best ST coder ever.

It's really fucking lame that these links don't work over and over again. Now it's impossible to download the second disk. Shit.
Yerz: stop using the word lame so easily! links fixed now!

Holocaust prods rule in general...
rulez added on the 2006-05-11 23:47:32 by CiH CiH
Ok, it does rule but is there something in the second disk? There is crash and burn after the white screenshot with vegetta :P

Whatever I have seen in size one is simply amazing. Wow, wow, wow!!! Haven't seen so many dots together before! Dots, more dots, dot records!!! Dots are perfect codepr0n!!!
rulez added on the 2006-05-13 14:45:50 by Optimus Optimus
Man there was 7000+ dots 3d wave!!!

Zappy...top 3 atari st coder ever.
Sad that he left atari....Keops bring him back!
added on the 2006-11-01 23:54:33 by moredhel moredhel
Quick dots and polygons which is a feast for the eyes. Overscan stuff that rocks hard.

However, if Zappy and the guys would have had original music with sync to the fx together with some other graphics style (manga - yuck) it would probably be a tenfold better demo. Also resetting now and then to load next part is a bit ugly, and their reset routine doesn't work on TOS 2 (so bye bye MSTe).

Aye

Lacks of desing, yes.

I know coder pron..but this is a real rape.

Reading some comments above from people having trouble to run the second disk, I uploaded a recording to Google Video. Surely it looks jerky etc, on the real deal it's mostly 1 vbl stuff.
added on the 2006-11-03 20:59:55 by evil evil
Simply awesome (love the first tune) and pretty nice effects for it's time as well. Shame it doesn't work in TOS 2.0* so I'll have to stick with emulation or the video since I'm lazy.

It was a real honour to take part into this production. Now that both Virtual escape and Illusion are out, Zappy can come out from retirement as he promised a long time ago.
rulez added on the 2007-01-14 19:50:36 by micdune micdune
Thanks guys :) We didn't have much design for two main reasons:
a) at the time of Blood we were only really 2 coders with no artist, no sound guy, and not much connections in "the scene" (although the brilliant contributions from Mic/Dune helped a bit)
b) well... we didn't really care about design anyway. It was really by-coders-for-coders, and that's it.

An initial version of the "Keops Game" actually existed at some point, but I have no idea if or where the source code survived. It was supposed to be a remake of "Jetpac", where you had to kill small "Keops" (the ball with a grin) instead of aliens, and collect "dragon balls" instead of spaceship elements. We never found the motivation to finish it, but we had pretty much all the graphics we needed.

In the first fullscreen at the end of disk 1, you can see a weird flickering in the bottom border. I think it's the remaining CPU time being drawn. We never ever saw that on our ST monitors, apparently they couldn't display as many lines as other monitors out there :) There's a similar bug in the "giant dragonball" in the beginning. We just never saw that at home.

The second fullscreen is vaguely inspired from an Amiga demo, can't remember which one... Maybe Anarchy's Krest Mass Leftovers?
Damn, why did I never vote on this... I was a Holocaust Groupie in my former life! Love it!

Great demo - those having trouble on steem should download pasti.dll (an st disk emulator thingy)
http://pasti.fxatari.com/
plonk the dll in the steem directory
click the disk options thingy, "use pasti" and then configure pasti to "most accurate"

rotozoom code looks familiar:
Code: MOVE.L $1234(A0),D0 OR.L $1234(A1),D0 OR.L $1234(A2),D0 OR.L $1234(A3),D0 MOVEP.L D0,(A5)

I'm a bit surprised that was already known in 1994

ok, that C2P was known in 1992:
