Gargaj, the synth only runs on FreeBSD or Linux ia32 mode. It's written in Assembler, so for other platforms there's simply a wave file.

I feel so much better about every single compatibility-adverse decision I've ever made now ;)

HBC's 4k space station beat the crap out of this 32k's model. Old film scratch effect (if that was the intention) could have been improved a bit to get better "old film" feeling to it. Not bad and I liked the structure of the story!

What Gargaj said. Moreover, where is the 40kB binary? All I see is a 2.6MB exe file (which doesn't seem to work).

Compo binary is in rel/ named "cassini_freebsd-ia32_compo_720p_fullscreen" (or "_windowed").

Some very nice scenes, but a tad.. I dunno, empty feeling?

for the scene after the greets. the rest is so so and the music is not my cup of tea.

has this really nice positive adventurous atmosphere full of trust in the future
the cloud rendering was extra neat and the precalc simulation thing was a fun idea :)

I liked it. :)
Although I almost quit at the precalc since I didn't realize it was a precalc. Or was it?
rulez added on the 2018-08-06 12:33:43 by jimmi jimmi
@jimmi: It was indeed precalc. We provided an option for a pre-recorded and encoded video without it, but as usual, the crew used a direct screen capture. For some reason they chose to include the whole precalc, this time, which I believe hasn't happened to us before.

Note: The texture of Saturn was captured from the 500th frame of the fluid simulation, which occurs at around 10 seconds into the precalc. Music and moon surfaces take much longer, which is the reason Saturn's surface isn't as turbulent as the texture ends up being.

@Zavie: The windows binary isn't compressed in any way and does not use any tricks at all. It should work, because I've literally run it hundreds of times, but I think there might be an bug in where it searches for the uncompressed shaders/audio/font for text rendering. We will look into this.

Cool! Educational intro

This intro stays afloat thanks to a couple factors:
  • Mostly believable enough scale in the geometry
  • The gas expulsion and the soft shadows it casts
  • Strange very characteristic and personal references
  • The optimistic very well composed music

It's not the prettiest (looking or sounding) thing, the rendering is no Fermi Paradox, but it's just good enough that I'm not bothered 90% of the time (the lack of tonemapping in the blown highlights comes very close though). It's always delightful to see a production where it isntantly feels there was a good working relationship with the musician and the person in charge of directing and editing the thing. This is a rare example of that narrow but important aspect being well executed, despite whatever shortcomings. I feel like I'm seeing an educational short subject on... well, the subject of the intro, and there's even a degree of scientific realism employed. It just overall feels like this was a work of passion. I was very pleasantly surprised by this in the compo and happy to see it land in the top-3.

Actually I really wanna stress more how much I liked the music. It made me feel happy to be alive in the universe.

Synth & associated tools now available here https://github.com/Juippi/ghostsyn . It's essentially the same thing that was used in a few previous 4k intros, which partly explains the fairly basic sounding instruments.

The music reminded me of some late-80s/early-90s shmup soundtrack (the era was dominated by upbeat, anthemic synth motifs spearheaded by Konami's Gradius which exemplified them)—which makes it doubly relevant as this is an intro about space! In that sense it certainly felt nice and, to a degree, nostalgic, although I'd probably never want to hear it outside the intro.

On the other hand, the visuals were quite drab most of the time; neither being particularly pleasing aesthetically nor very realistic (even if the phenomena being shown were real), although a certain degree of ambition to go beyond a boring fly-by was obvious. It's a shame to see so much untapped potential in what is a very workable idea being teased. At only half the size of the category there's certainly more than enough room to fit in a more articulated, better-edited, pleasant-looking story about the probe and its mission. With actually readable bits of text that don't require one watch a video so that they can pause. I can only assume it didn't happen because of the time constraints. And I'll probably never see the full 64k version this intro deserves. Oh well. A weak thumb it is.

@noby: Around a decade ago I used to play this track on repeat to dig myself out of quarter-life crisis-related bouts of depression. Surprisingly, it helped.

I have to mostly disagree with noby here. The music really doesn't fit what I saw on screen. Now that said, the music is great; the geometry is great. But they just don't connect in my head.

I felt this was missing is some kind of ambient lighting and tonemapping. A lot of the shadows were too black and in some cases the whites were too white.

Content-wise the production is really nice for the size.

Watched second time and actually liked it more, seconding branch about the lighting/tonemapping.
