-Won the Newcomer Award
-YouTube link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpUMWNv9BRo

-Needs about a gig of memory to get into the demo
-Made with Processing libraries
-Aptly shows that we're beginners at this whole demo-making thing.
-Was mostly made over the month before the party, but planned earlier than that.
-Is hopefully entertaining
will the sequel feature unicorns and whales instead? :)

Starting off by modeling real-life (let alone animate) objects in your firstie is a ballsy move... there's a reason most people tend to avoid that. :) Kudos for taking risks.

Out of curiosity, though, what kind of sought-after talent did you expect this demo to showcase w.r.t. the employment message at the end? Because, while it might be good entertainment for a party, the demo doesn't seem to speak in your skills' favor convincingly for a potential employer (e.g. a gig of memory for 2002-era visuals seems quite harsh...).

With a name like "Monoceros", you can expect a unicorn. We'll keep our current ideas as a surprise for the moment, though. :)

I'd hope that it'd showcase that we can learn new things and plan and execute a project. Still, it's less that we expected it to be a showcase (I'm a CS grad student with no graphics background, and Dusty is an IT consultant on medical software), and more something we tossed in in the hopes that we might find a lead somewhere. We'd like to stay in Europe, go to more demo parties, and make more demos, but we're trying to figure out how.

In other words, we wanted to make a demo, and enjoy making things with computers. Anything else was icing.

Thanks. And doing that animation with Processing was a large part of what took a lot of the time in making it, I think. I know it looks far from perfect, and we hope to use an object standard (and something other than Processing) next time that allows us to move bones, but hopefully we did it well enough to get the story across. Even if we did have birds flying backwards, once.
Everyone has to start somewhere I guess. :) But just like moozooh, I pretty much doubt that someone wants to hire you after watching this demo though.

I figure you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I think it showcases initiative, creativity, and the ability to bite off more than we can chew :) And it's not likely to not get us a job.

Plus when time-travellers from 1995 show up, we're gonna blow their minds.

I had to tweak the Java command line a bit to get this to run because I seriously didn't expect the amount of memory it was eating (this was after it silently crashed a few times during loading and I set there like a lemon waiting for it to finish).

Otherwise it's sorta endearing, but the crudeness of it all (in every aspect - visuals, audio, technology) takes too much suspension of disbelief to make it enjoyable. Relatively well-paced though.

the credits part 3d object "tunnel" was the best part of the thing. design and music were a bit lacking but usually that's how the first prods go. :)

I tend to motivationally thumb up firsties, but this one sucks so hard in every aspect, also first things you do is to state that it won the newcomer award AND selfvote up. sorry, but..... here is your well deserved thumb.

This was very crude, but hey, most of the people never release their firsties let alone put them in Pouet so at least you were brave enough for that.

Thumbing up (or down) your own prods or those of your groupmates is considered BM - even if imaginary Internet points hardly matter, it's just one of the conventions on this site.

The most enjoyable demo. I liked the narwal rescuing the unicorn. What a twist!

Well, someone is salty. I hope you never try to step out of your comfort zone and get rewarded with a similar attitude.

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I'll avoid it in the future. As that was my first post here, I didn't know. I just had to pick something, so I thought, why not? It appears I can't edit it, but at least waffle has kindly balanced it for me.

For what little it's worth, I stated that it won the Newcomer Award (because it seemed pertinent. It still finished 9th of 10 for a reason.), and Dusty (Meganoceros) voted up the prod. The only connection was that I told Dusty to make an account so I could add credits for her.

But thanks for the etiquette lesson on the site, regardless. After Dusty put in her comment, we discussed that very issue.

...and while the other comments are surely at least partially tongue in cheek, I do hope that at least some people enjoyed our attempt at telling a story. Thanks for the encouragement.

No, see, the twist is narwhal rescuing and romancing a horse, so their offspring become unicorns. Because, y'know, they share the appearance of both parents! There should be a secret ending to this where the youngest child is a hooved whale. :p

...and then we commented on the same thing at the same time. We're totally coordinated.
Apologies, sir balanced my upvote with a downvote. waffle gave us a very nice upvote :)
moozooh! spoilers!

"If you're going to make a first demo please make it something like this instead of trying to poorly imitate conventions set by quarter century old amiga demos", to paraphrase what I said during the compo.

With that said, this is still not my thing at all really and there's lot to work on, but thumbs up for making people mad with cute stuff and trying to compose actual scenes with very primitive methods.

In a way it's already solid stylistically, but in the future try to think of the editing, cutting and framing/composition more, instead of just holding a single shot for a minute for an example :)

Thanks noby! :) There was a lot more we hoped to do with it, like moving the camera, as you said, but time was short. We're hoping to have a much more solid grasp of things so we can use better tools (not processing) and have a much better demo next time.
what is this

I can't say anything positive about your demo but welcome to the scene!
