20mb seems quite too much.. let's see how the demo looks :-D
Thank you for making my gf4 feel even more obsolete.

this demo is good, the music is not so good =( the fan scene is cool, the other stuff is cinda boring =( but this is still a good demo, good work!

um, this is not very good. the cloth-scene is also so mindnumbingly slow (about 0.1fps) that it skipped to the greetings-scene, and I probably missed out on the fan-scene (since I didn't see a fan anywhere). and those system requirements are completely ridiculous.

Shit.. I just downloaded it. Now, I read comments about disgusting speed. I am to corrilla to watch this demo ;P

ohwell, for the mp3 + textures and for not being able to see the thing with gf4 :)

its OK, the cloth scene is painfully slow, like sagacity says, about 0.1fps!.
Apart from that, its pretty average. Being designed for DX9 though should be commended, i very rarely see any prod that makes use of DX8.1, let alone DX9. To me, one of the things that makes the demoscene, was lthat it actually pushed and took advantage of modern hardware. Although, having seen some of ATI's own DX9 demos, a lot more work needs to be done.

20mb is for me some kind of border where i'm refusing a download (atleast w/o DSL etc.)

stefan: don't get me wrong, i have nothing against using advanced pixel shader features in demos. i just think the demos should still be made to work also on gfx-cards that don't support them.

i find it really bad for amiga demos not having fallback to win2k to

it sucks.

i have gf2.
i have dx9
i don't have required hardware.
it's over 20mb -> it must suck.
it sucks anyway.

And why exploring new stuff is bad goes over my head. Smile and be happy that someone tries to push us forward.

gargaj: you may want to try installing dx9.
added on the 2003-02-17 20:13:19 by sagacity sagacity
ok, new drivers converted the messagebox to an "Error loading texture" one.
When you code for a stuff that is only in, let's say, 10% of PC's, then make it run on that 10% goddamit.

...and make a handy mpeg version.
added on the 2003-02-17 20:17:15 by tomaes tomaes
sagacity: there IS dx9 installed. since d3d9.dll is an import and not dynamically loaded, it shouldn't even throw a messagebox in that case. well. it should, but it would say that it needs dx9.
thank you sir, i may look like an idiot, but i think i can distinguish error messages.

I can see that someone beat me to the screenshots, i was just about to upload some..

it's a very technical demo but some parts look really good, especially the aging landscape. I guess my biggest complaints would have to be the song that doesn't fit entirely but i know that the demo was kinda rushed together during the party so i won't judge it to much because of this. It's a thumb anyhow.
rulez added on the 2003-02-18 19:23:20 by a_lee_n a_lee_n
stefan: i would have, if the info had been online. i'm not wasting an hour on isdn to download something that requires dx9 (an additional download). it's all rather rational really.
added on the 2003-02-18 20:40:30 by gloom gloom
Well I cant watch this on my config, but I dont know what youre on to when you thumb this down for requiring up to date hardware. I think its exciting that somebody makes stuff that exploits the cutting edge of available technology. I think that is something we have been missing in the demoscene.

Thumbs up for people that start using new technology early instead of 3 years too late.

I haven`t seen the demo though, but anyway, i`m trying to balance things a little.
rulez added on the 2003-02-18 22:54:21 by Wain Wain
Don't thumb this prod down just because you can't watch it. There's plenty of demos for older hardware already, which you CAN watch... So watch those.
If you start thumbing down prods only because you can't run em, where will it all end? Should we all thumb down the CPC demos for example?

I don't mind people writing demos for hardware that I don't have. I just hope that they use that hardware well, and make something beautiful out of it. That's what the scene should be about.

My 2 cents etc...
added on the 2003-02-18 23:01:40 by Scali Scali
i'm rather SICK of people thumbing up "because they use modern features" when the usage doesn't do the result any justice. stupid brainless deprived-from-any-experience-in-the-field wankers.
added on the 2003-02-18 23:12:29 by superplek superplek
Well, what can i say... In the "good old days" the demoscene was in many ways ahead of the gaming industry when it came to technology... Nowadays when somebody tries to push things forward, instead of following the stream using old hardware spec. stuff, everyone strives to go even more backwards, well thats really logical isnt it. Really constructive you guys. Again, the demoscene is meant to be constructive and newthinking, lets try to live up to it. Cheers.

Signed, yet another guy that cant watch the demo. And thats too bad... for me.

you're making one mistake (and Bush doesn't allow us to make those): in the past, some tried to achieve things that were next to impossible (ok, this is very subjective but that's what people thought ;-)) on a certain piece of hardware. this is just plain raping new features to achieve something that could be achieved in many different ways, broadening your public. besides to that, what's the fucking use of making a demo (and you must agree that the scope of demos has become much larger than just some wankers jacking off to a piece of halfway impressive code) when people can't enjoy it?

blah.

being a trekkie myself, i always believed that it is nice to go boldly where no one has gone before...or to discover undiscovered lands...so...i haven't seen this prod..probably won't see it anytime soon..i haven't got the iron to do so...nevertheless i think that since DX9 is available, and powerfull gpus are out there, why not making prods that use their firepower?Should a group consider before making a prod the limititations or the imaginations?Collaborate or humour me..

superplek:
Perhaps people dont wank to code like you do? Excuse me, but your whole situation seems to center around wanking, is that so? Well, as i said, i find it interesting that people at least tries to do things that differ from what everybody does, trying to use different technology. Coders should not restrict to some certain hardware configuration because its the most popular one. Well of course they should if their sole purpose with the demo is to show it on their grandpas (and his tidy friends) newly bought compaq computer.

pixel:
Lets not involve raping of moms.Theres probably some nice site out there waiting for you if you are interested.
added on the 2003-03-03 13:42:49 by hexxon hexxon
i'm in no way advocating restriction to a certain hardware configuration. there is a slight difference between requirements and realistic requirements.
added on the 2003-03-03 14:01:35 by superplek superplek
The Amiga 500's demoscene heyday was probably between '89 and '91. When you consider the hardware was pretty much the same as the original 1985 A1000, asking the scene to switch to six month old 9700's is a little unrealistic. It's nice to see new hardware being used, but at the same time, most people don't have the latest and greatest for either coding *or* watching.
superplek:
Well if the routines of ATI's cards were compatible with Nvidias, or vice versa, then the requirements wouldnt be that unrealistic, would they? Thats a real shame, not even trying to cooperate.

thom:
Whose asking for anybody to switch to radeon 9700?
