My first prod, be gentle! :)
windows port please? :)
Sorry, I tried to compile it for windows, and it ended up running slower on a 2.0GHz WinXP machine than my 300MHz Linux one. I also don't have a MikMod library for windows, so it didn't have music :(. I'd rather force people not to judge it on the crummy windows version, at least until it's fixed :)
yeah!

Ok, by popular demand (ie, two people ;), I've made a (fixed) windows version:
http://roundtable.cif.rochester.edu/~willdb/debut2003w.zip
I also fixed up some problems with the linux version, see the new README for more info.
Should I submit the windows version separately, or just leave this link here?
It is a piggie from me, because i really dislike the music and the fact that it ran in a window the size of a stamp on my desktop ;) But the render in the picture above is really nice

It's not how big your desktop is, it's how you use it ;)

Also, what didn't you like about the music? Was the playback quality bad, or the style?
I really dislike the music too, sorry.. but, please, ever heard of fullscreen? That window is very small on my 19" monitor..

and I didn't really like the prod itself either, it's too "boring".. nothing interesting at all, no "action" in it..

so try again =)

OK, I put in a fullscreen option, just run debut2003f instead of debut2003. I can't quite fix the 'boring' bug until the next demo, though ;) Maybe I should try to recruit a musician for my 'group', if you guys dislike mine so much :-/
new files up for download at:
linux version
and
windows version
seen the win version.
maybe it lacks a bit action, but yes, I like it, and yes, I think it deserves a thumb up.
most of all, its original.
music is not bad imho.
keep working!

Not large and action-packed, but I liked what effects there were (the ray trace scene could use more frames, though).
The music roks ;)

1st demo perhaps, but no excuse for rgb awful colors
sorry but the music is terrible and design none
with your effects, you're able to do a better prod than this crap

zone: you know well that effects are only a portion of a demo... but how about lending a helping hand with graphics?

now seriously.
what you should change is that...
- you should forget sdl. and linux. sad but true and it may hurt but 90% of the pc demoscene uses some kind of a windows, and if you want to show them your work, you have to use their choice. and as you saw it, sdl is definetely not the choice for performance based graphics whatsoever. go write your own ddraw wrapper, it's only a day's work... or use PTC/TinyPTC
- forget mikmod!!! mikmod is the ultimate way of mutilating your carefully written modules... (not to mention the extra pain of unexpected bursts of white noise for the viewer who has dsound debug installed :) there are so many cooler soundlibs out there, just to mention BASS or fmod... hell, even SDL's xm-player plays modules better than mikmod.
- make your demo ONE executable. it's not hard. it's harder to manage and sync tho, but that's not really THAT painful. and i mean EXE not BAT :)
- avoid modechanges. or just wait a bit after you do it (think of people with cheap monitors or cheap projectors :))
- don't emphasize on the demo being a one-man-prod that much :)
- add some action, dude :)

all in all this may sound harsh, but despite this i'd like to give a thumb up because...
- coding on a 300 celeron RULES!!! :)
- hey you managed to make your first demo and even had the guts to release it :)
- the raytracer was nice, tho it was a "tad" odd (and slow :)
- the music was listenable, with quite enjoyable chord progressions in some places. you should dare to use more samples tho.
- spengler thumbed it down :)

so i'm waiting for your next prod :)
