ok im gonna sound like a smartass here but anyways, isnt a ps3 demo running under linux just a linux demo running on a ps3? and linux on the ps3 was a fucking nightmare anyways. glad i updated. ;/

xeron: thats INCREDIBLE. like saying linux running on a pc uses a intel processor... or on a mac with a ppc

NEVER Mind. im not technically giftogeekified.

vid please.

This demo needs a Cell processor as it uses its SPE ("Synergistic Processing Elements") components.
A video will be provided.

Cool demo, finished at the party... First non commercial PS3 demo it seems! :)

Nice design, but technically i would have expected much more on a PS3.

Video uploaded to scene.org. Should be available soon.

For the impatient, there is a torrent link : http://ouasse.ath.cx/ps3/retrostation.ogg.torrent

I know Zerkman spent a long time on this one, but it's too easy to see that it was put together in a hurry so there's obviously a lot of unused potential (Soundtrack is nice though :-).

Flat- and gouraurd shading? On PS3? I mean, I'm not one to judge a demo merely by its technical side, but there's no design to speak of, the effects are .. well, take a average PC demo from 1992-1994 and you get this. Music does not do it for me either. If the purpose was to be retro, I guess you succeeded, but .. meh.

Fucking rad, thanks for bringing two of my favourite things together!

Yup, looked quite old-fashioned. Despite any technical merit this just wasn't very nice to look at.

It's nice that people are making demos for the ps3. But the choice of colors, the shading and the aliasing makes this look like a Windows screensaver from the mid-early '90s. Hopefully making this was a learning experience so that next time you can make something better.

Disclaimer: the mic credited in this demo is not me :P

Cheers for taking up the challenge to do a software renderer on ps3 from scratch! Hope you add more "cool" stuff soon and release a demo so that whiny people will stop complaining ;)

Another linux-demo and a pretty awful one. The visuals were plain terrible and the music wasn't that much better...

For information, no excuse, but it was a one and a half party days prod on scripting/putting together/fixing (and music composing).
And about the 3D engine itself, it as been entirely coded by Zerkman from scratch.

Also when it's said that the demo runs successfully on a "32-bit Debian GNU/Linux system for powerpc", it's about this distrib being installed on a PS3, not on that it would run on any PowerPC.

Not only this is a great oldschool demo, this time it also was a technical challenge. RULEZ! Only PS3 makes it possible :-)
rulez added on the 2010-05-19 07:31:05 by RCL RCL
Well, I exaggerated with "great oldschool demo", but I was pissed off by people giving it "piggy"!

Please, DON'T JUDGE IT BY VISUALS!

It takes vastly different amount of effort to produce something like that on a usual PC (even running Linux) and on a PS3, where you are stripped off everything but CPU (with its SPUs, of course).

This demo is the only one of its kind. Giving it "piggy" IS LIKE GIVING PIGGY C64 Second Reality port just because it's not on par with PC original!
added on the 2010-05-19 07:41:48 by RCL RCL
RCL: Why shouldn't the demo be judged by its visuals? The code here is pretty standard stuff, so no props for that.

And I really don't think making a Linux-demo is much of a technical challenge, ESPECIALLY if it's all done by the CPU...
added on the 2010-05-19 08:00:12 by britelite britelite
britelite: PS3 Linux is an unique platform, not comparable with PCs.

Sony gimped PS3 Linux by not allowing it to access PS3's GPU (RSX), so normally a PS3 Linux program is not able to render 720p visuals in 60 fps.

And PS3's CPU is a hybrid of "conventional" (weak) core with GPU-like specialized cores, which is programmed quite differently than conventional CPUs. I'd say that an iPhone or Nokia N900 is much more PC-like than PS3 (especially in its nerfed PS3 Linux form).

So kudos to original author for overcoming the platform limiations and making it able to show high-res graphics in realtime.
added on the 2010-05-19 11:11:37 by RCL RCL
RCL: I'm fully aware of the crippled PS3 Linux, still doesn't make it any more impressive.

But ok, hooray for the PS3 being able to display 386-quality effects in realtime :)
added on the 2010-05-19 12:01:53 by britelite britelite
Would be more interesting if it was exploiting the fact it's a pure CPU demo not limited by some arbitrary rasterizer hardware, I mean, you got some insane floating point processing power, and all you try to do is some flat and gouraud shaded triangles...

Got a smile when I saw the yellow rounded cube that have a :| face cross the screen. Probably a wink to that good old Promax's cube (without the nose :))

Not sure what to say about this. There were a lot of polys at nice resolution all intersecting properly with blending between frames and fake phong shading. That seems cool, but since I don't know if this kind of thing requires the parallelism of the Cell to achieve I can only judge it on design and music, and for that I can't give it a thumb.
