So, our demo for not-a-real-demoparty. It's ImagineCup, and the voting happens online right now (2004 May15-Jun01). Feel free to go to http://www.imaginecup.com/rendering_gallery.aspx , register and vote for us or any other demo :)

I don't have objective opinion on this demo, so I won't thumb it up. But I like it! :D

Well the engine is pretty nice, but I didn't like the show itself...
added on the 2004-05-17 10:34:09 by BoyC BoyC
i agree with boyc, a thumb for the engine and some of the textures, but too boring and nausiating camera movements.

Short but sweet, great engine and textures, nice music too ...

Cool looking, a bit slow sometimes here, nice idea!

awful camera-moves, boring.
added on the 2004-05-17 12:55:56 by gloom gloom
Well, this isn't exactly a "demo" as you would expect in a real demoparty. It would probably look very bad on the bigscreen...
The goal of ImagineCup "demos" is something between tech-demos (like at IHV sites) and demoscene-demos. So, we just made a slow-paced, slightly melancholic demo (yes it may be boring :))...
added on the 2004-05-17 15:05:39 by NeARAZ NeARAZ
Nice effects, but yeah... needs some more content :)
rulez added on the 2004-05-17 15:06:58 by breez breez
thumb up ! the engine rocks like hell
rulez added on the 2004-05-17 23:11:42 by nytrik nytrik
Ok, maybe I don't know what "the engine" is... Our "engine" knows absolutely nothing about the effects that are rendered. So, I can't say that the engine rocks because the effects are cool :)
All our demos use the same (constantly evolving) engine, and in all cases there's no a single line of code for any of the effects in the engine itself... (all effects are in data/fx folder, DX9 rocks :))

very slow... awful camera tracks... boring... some things nice, and a lot ugly

quite nice! Cute idea. Fix the up-vector rotation problem, please! :)
rulez added on the 2004-05-18 14:23:25 by hornet hornet
Well - I haven't got a graphics card with any pixelshaders at all, so all I get is a rather simple fall-back engine - but it looks nice, and the idea of having an world-inside-a-world is quite nice too...

Thumbs up for at least having a fall-back path.

cool shaders and effects but rather slow and boring. more time should be spent on modelling and thextures, and the camera movement was sucky
added on the 2004-05-18 15:38:32 by Duckers Duckers
Wow! That one is going quite well, despite my sucky card and impressive appearence... and i'm curious to know how the effects were done. :>

And the graphic quality is very high - i'd say too high for the demoscene. :>
rulez added on the 2004-05-18 16:23:11 by eye eye
eye: all effects/shaders are in data/fx, in plain text "d3dx effects" format. actually, they are pretty standard :)

Amazing

Funny programming, but I don't like the art.

Very good rendering quality.
added on the 2004-05-18 18:44:00 by wain_ wain_
The camera movements could be better and the demo lacks a bit of action, but the rest of the design is not bad at all and the demo is interesting to watch.
I also like the music, as it is rather unusual and fits quite well.
About the visuals... well, everything has been said! The effects are not just very good, but they actually seem to work on most Gfx cards.
rulez added on the 2004-05-18 18:53:46 by mjz mjz
It's a bore and the camera movement is on par with nextempire's efforts in demomaking. Still, I like it. Cool tech going on here, degrades nicely on older hardware.
rulez added on the 2004-05-19 02:30:09 by Shifter Shifter
Rendering quality is nice indeed. However I do think that it isn't enough: overall demo is boring and camera movement is just that what's been said before.
added on the 2004-05-19 10:05:10 by Vulture Vulture
Ooops. Beautifull show. The music (ambient) is perfecly fit and the whole thing kick ass good !
rulez added on the 2004-05-19 10:44:29 by AbcuG! AbcuG!
Really nice engine, graphics and music, all I missed was some "sense", so to say. The camera is indeed weird, and even tho I like the "story" or "concept", I found it a bit too much of an object-show.
rulez added on the 2004-05-19 11:26:40 by Gargaj Gargaj
hey, what's wrong with camera? yeah, i agree that in some places it is _weird_:) but in other places it had to be such, it's such style or smth...
and btw in our previous demo Syntonic Dentiforms from Breakpoint camera also was done by me, and it has the same style, but we hadn't complaints about that.

it is created for ImagineCup contest (ImagineCup isn't demoparty), so it has to be effect show/tech-demo...
added on the 2004-05-19 11:49:01 by OneHalf OneHalf
excellent quality... but the camera destroyed it a little for me. Looked like the camera path was an afterthought, or a first attempt with a spline editor ;) How about some more interesting cuts and angles next time (perhaps with more closeups too to show the texturing/effects?)

Also, the dof effect is leaving a halo around some foreground objects. Maybe you can get around that by adding more layers (with increasing levels of blur) and selecting which to use based on distance... worked better for me when i last used that technique, but then i wasn't working in realtime so maybe its impractical :)

The transition when zooming into the fly's head looked a little obvious too... maybe RTTing the target scene and using it as the texture would improve it?

Good work anyway.
rulez added on the 2004-05-19 15:05:01 by psonice psonice
psonice: oh well, everyone bashes the camera :) yes, DOF "leaks", but we din't want to make it very expensive (it has 3 layers now, and no checking of "leaking")...

my gf4ti doesn't shows the fur :/

killer engine!! BIG THUMBS UP
rulez added on the 2004-05-19 16:02:22 by v3nom v3nom
kudos for including all the shaders/effects (for different cards) in a seperate folder and making sure it runs at decent framerates anywhere ...

I hope more people start buying modern cards, a geforce FX 5200 for example is 60 euros nowadays, no reason not to upgrade ;)
a geforce fx 5200 is no modern card ;P
added on the 2004-05-19 21:05:04 by PigPen PigPen
a gf5200 is absolutely useless. a card notably slower than a gf2ti, but with pixelshader 2.0 support - yeah right.
added on the 2004-05-19 21:30:46 by ryg ryg
Radeon 9600 SE is about the same price but much faster, btw...
added on the 2004-05-19 23:01:31 by mjz mjz
9600 SE is still to be avoided IMO. Things like less than half the memory bandwidth (compared to Pro) really hurt the performance.
added on the 2004-05-20 01:17:02 by breez breez
Of course. But if you want something cheap and 8500/9100 does not satisfy you (lack of DX 9), it is still a better choice than FX5200.
And if you want a really bad, but more expensive card, get sth. like 5600 LE/XT or 5700 LE/XT...
added on the 2004-05-20 01:34:02 by mjz mjz
I know, just making a point that money should not be an issue ;)
Yeah, it runs perfectly on a FX5200 . An interest and other thing i don't saw any fur :(
Ryg: don' blame the gf2ti please. I have a gf2mx400 and with the most (ofcourse _dx7 hardware compatible_ program) produce better framerate than a FX5200. Technically better (i hope at least :) but that horrible rendering speed ... :(
added on the 2004-05-20 10:26:15 by AbcuG! AbcuG!
abcug: uh, something's wrong then (your drivers or our code :)); fur should be seen on all ps2.0 cards
added on the 2004-05-20 11:55:11 by NeARAZ NeARAZ
Does it really run perfectly when effects are missing? ;)

The engine looks really cool, but as a demo it's not that good (camera movements, a bit short for its size...). Anyway, it wasn't meant for a "classic" demo competition.

This demo is among top5 finalists. Wooohooo:)

I just found a link to this on flipcode... looks amazing, even with no fur (gf4ti4600), the camera IS kinda strange... however my camera paths suck too and I don't even get close to the image quality of this prod, so...

Have to thumb up a production with such a good idea. There just exists too few demos with a clear concept like this nowdays. Don't care about minor flaws with camera or dof halos here.
