TEN MEGABYTES?

That's just insane, heh...

10 MB for a Diskmag ? you suck.

Great issue! Spent whole night reading it. Lots of nice articles and party reports, decent background music (Genox rocks!) and funny charts. Indeed worth downloading the whole 10Mb zip file.

Eh, ok. They broke the old size-record from shine #8, that was about 7Mb.

So, what do you get for 10Mb: 4 tunes, 2 of them are MP3s, plus a PAiN issue, with an improved engine and some nice articles to read (2 of them dealing with pouet =)). Unlock says in the edito, that it's the best issue ever, but imho that's not really true. :)

Anyway, I personally would have liked a 'light version', but heck... It's ok.

pain rulez. period.
rulez added on the 2002-02-25 01:52:30 by cp_ cp_
Well executed, the size is a laugh but it's alledgedly a "once-because-we-celebrate-something" thing.

Most of the stuff was quite readeable, but this PAiN crashed on me now and then. Nothing a restart could fix, but a bit odd.

this is the best PAiN magazine ever!
Nice music and cool interface.
Worth the download!

whining about the size of a release is definitely insane. this is PAiN, it's issue 50, and all the guys who worked for it spent some of their time on it. so, unlock should make a light version, removing some musicians from the adventure to please some of you guys? i really hope he won't. in year 2002, 10mb is nothing. (btw, we were certain of such reactions. you guys are so previsible... fortunately so isn't PAiN) go on unlock! great, great release. big thumb up.

this just proves that pain is so much better than hugi, but.. I guess you all knew that ...

no i won't make a small one. you better stop leeching pron and mp3 all day. then you have bandwidth left for scene releases. kidding.
added on the 2002-02-25 08:47:19 by unlock unlock
'whining about the size of a release is definitely insane.'

Dear fred, FYI, there are still people (like me) with a 56k connection. And for those hopeless ones, size still matters. Otherwise I would not care much. I already said this to unlock on IRC.
added on the 2002-02-25 09:39:35 by tomaes tomaes
tomaes: i know, i know. but you leeched it, no? so was it such a PAiN? patience is a virtue :) but my comments were more intendend to feedbacks like '10 MB for a Diskmag ? you suck'. (all future PAiN releases won't be 10MB big, we all know that... so why bother..). and have a nice day.
added on the 2002-02-25 10:28:21 by fred fred
10megs *is* a bit too much, but for a celebratition issue it's okay. who am I to complain anyway?.. these guys know what's good for us.

fred: Actually I downloaded it TWICE because the rar files gave me a CRC-(t)error, so I downloaded again, this time the big package. So much to my patience. :))

Yeah! cool :)
10 megas is a little too much but who cares?
We don't have 28k anymore :)
rulez added on the 2002-02-25 13:33:28 by MooZ MooZ
It's not bigger than an average demo, it features more soundtracks (one expecially is cool as fuck... =D )and it lasts longer.

rulez added on the 2002-02-25 18:25:49 by dixan dixan
Maybe it's a good diskmag but I won't download it as it will be too long for my humble 56k modem...
The many sceners who don't have a broadband connection will probably do the same and eventually Pain will lose some potential readers. But hey, it seems that people without a broadband connection aren't just 3l33t enough...

Of course, for some of us getting broadband or even ISDN is COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE. Not even a question of money, though I guess if I had a couple of million lying around I could persuade someone to install it.

Living in the countryside sucks. So do downloads over 5mb or something, unless they have a good reason to be. Which, maybe, being issue 50 or something, is a good reason.
added on the 2002-02-26 00:24:11 by golrien golrien
"It's not bigger than an average demo" <- it would be more funny and less tragic if it wasn't the godawful truth Dixan =(

do what you want. pain is the name and it should be like this. 10 megs on an isdb or analog line are not more than approx. 1h, so don't behave that foolish. we don't care anyways.
added on the 2002-02-26 08:33:20 by unlock unlock
keep pain alive.

don't vote me on charts you idiots!
I'll plame the low number of voters for that. I guess pain stuff should improve their marketing about voting for next issues :-)

Yeah, unlock!
great great great job. I just spent 30 minutes to have a first look and I am impressed. You put a much a much of work in it and I especially liked the review of all the PAiN issues. I'm glad I could do a tune for this PAiN. Best PAiN ever I think.

Yeah, dixan, your tune really rocks. It's a shame,it didn't make it to the compo. Keep on this work, I think you've got a huge talent. When I read the mag, I just pressed the '4' over and over again..
added on the 2002-02-27 13:39:25 by phred phred
phred: it's cool that my tune made it to this mag, so I have a real demoscene audience :D
shifter: yeah, I always diss large demo productions. At least this mag was a "special" edition, while huge demos are becoming a standard.

I complain..

It's not only about modem speed (I can easilly go to my university, download it all and fit it to disks zipped, or burn it on a CD among with other demowarez) and I have waited a lot of other times to download 10-20MBs through modem in my home (1-2+ hours, worth the time anyways..) and then burn in CDs to watch with friends..

It is mostly because my state as a scener is diferrent (I explained in another thread too) Demoscene was about optimization for me. Ok,. for me it was also about viewing cool stuff in older computers (Ok,. I can stick in my CPC if I want, gniah gniah ;P) the atmosphere is lost (Ok,. it was lost since time) with people having state of the art PCs, not caring at all, claiming that 10MB, 128MB ram, 30fps are very good and stuff..

I don't care that much, I have downloaded it (I am thinking to get the MP3s too in the disks to check them too!) it's worth since I want to read my CPC article ;)

I am just keeping whinning, sorry for that, it's an automatic attitude, in the state of the scener I am..

Ok,. I fuck off..

P.S. But tiny intros, DOS and assembly rulez anyways ;)

optimus: of course i agree with you and everybody else. but i stated that the size was only on behalf of the issue 50. and kure, what kind of articles would interest you? i have the slight feeling it's just about complaining that you posted. there were really lots of articles of every kind inside the mag.
added on the 2002-02-27 23:33:47 by unlock unlock
Not a bad issue as far as PC mags go.
added on the 2002-03-02 00:37:47 by Wade^Hjb Wade^Hjb
Hmm, way too big a download (especially since I had to dl it twice because the first time the zip was b0rken for some reason) but the musics are nice. I especially like the third track. Somehow it reminds me of a movie soundtrack.

I like Hugi's colourful interface better than PAiN's but it's a nice thing that the engine supports ANSI now. ANSI is a great form of art and people shouldn't let it die.

I have only read the first article section so I won't comment on the texts.

Well, speaking as a member of the PAiN staff, afterall I wasn't really at 100% satisfied with this issue but afterall IMHO this is the best diskmag there is. (On this plattform, we should not try to compare it with glorious issues of Generation, Seenpoint, Rom or RAW on Amiga. Compared to those works, PAiN is worth nothing!!! Sad but true. But okay, that were other times, let us now better do what we can to improve it instead of whining of the good old times.)

Only people who are doing a mag on their own KNOW how much work this is and Unlock has done a good job. Sure there are still some things left to improve but you can bet this will NOT be the last issue of PAiN!

And to those people with a slow connection: Stop this discussion, the next issue will be way smaller!! I have expected some more reactions concerning the articles but instead people speak how many minutes it took until they had this product on their harddisk, strange times!
rulez added on the 2002-05-14 14:17:49 by ghandy ghandy
hey ghandy, thanks for your words. however i don't like the comparsion with older amiga diskmags all the time, since it's a different scene (as you said) and a different time, and people have a different mentality. we've dicussed this already a lot and could continue with it when we met the next time, okay? just one thing you're right about too: people are always complaining (one thing you might not experience in the amiga scene too because everybody is happy that there's stuff left that is released, right?) and no one is really doing better. feedback on articles? forget it.. not in this lazy pouet.net "compla(in|m)er" demoscene that is out there.
added on the 2002-06-02 12:09:51 by unlock unlock
what do we expect from diskmags nowadays ??

to have the same role than in the past ?? definitely not .. online content has off course replaced diskmags for that ..
still diskmags aren't dead, they're just released less often, with fewer articles, but it's still nice to read party reports, point of view articles and demo tutorials presented in a diskmag view.. no website can offer this feeling of a new edition, with those new articles and online content most of the time disapears after some time while diskmags are still zipped on my hd.

and please stop those religion wars pain vs hugi vs shine..
it's definitely better to have multiple diskmags..

oh yes Andry, i should hurry up finishing my articles for the next edition =)
