Thanks for the write-ups and for making it in this cool diskmag format!
Hope we'll see more!

Really cool! The standard of English in this magazine is high and the layout is brilliant. The articles are certainly of interest to some readers, perhaps they’ll inspire a few of them to create their own MS-DOS demos.

Nice technical articles on your demos. A lot of the techniques are familiar or tricks I was already guessing :)

Well, I’ll try to cover some techniques and tricks in the next issue that you haven’t seen before and wouldn’t have guessed :)

Really nailed the diskmag aesthetic, and the explanations (and the tricks themselves) are top-notch. This is one of my favorite releases in decades.

finally found some time to actually read this, indeed a lovely little diskmag made with traditional diskmag vibe but running on modern platform. short on articles but all of them an interesting read.

would probably get more views if it was directly hosted online somewhere.

And make an issue about how I coded the DOS diskmag shell ;)

Or maybe you'll write a little article about your experiences with democodingl? :)

Nice diskmag, but I thought it would be about the DOS scene in general, and not only you prod. So abit disapointed there, but well done.

Are you interested in anything specific? The graphics in the demos? The design of the emag? A particular image?

This is just a pilot issue. If I keep the mag going, there’ll definitely be articles about demos other than my own :) It’d be great if someone else wrote about their experience with DOS demomaking, too.

I know the original reference of that image. An old illustration from the late 19th or early 20th century, the work of Jean-Marc Côté.

I’m just sad for this guy who lost a leg in transition.

Yeah, poor kid. A bit of retouching would have easily fixed it.

In any case, next time they’ll be more careful when tweaking the original sources. :]

I took an early 20th-century illustration from this series "En L'An 2000", ran it through AI, then tweaked it a bit, playing around with the colors and background blur.

Guess it’s time for me to pack my bags? :) I just wanted to make the reader smile.

No. Just state the AI usage in the nfo. We are trying to come to some sort of crediting standards.

And a word of advice: the mishap that left that poor boy one-legged is an example why every prod should have a dedicated (human) graphician, and that AI can not and must not be used to try and replace humans. You (and some others) may think it can replace people, some may even hope it does. But it can’t, it’s just your incompetence talking.

This thumb is for undisclosed AI usage.

Now i’m left wondering if the demo (Remoded) also has undisclosed AI usage.

Guess I didn’t take this seriously enough when releasing the diskmag (demos are another story). Next time, it’ll be easier to leave out an image touched by AI’s filthy hands than to slap an "AI usage" label on the whole prod.

Just to be clear: does using AI for spell-checking or for advice on HTML/CSS/JavaScript also mean the product needs an "AI-tainted" label?

And if you never get a definitive answer, will you be able to sleep soundly knowing you probably didn’t give a righteous thumb down to inferior prod?

God forbid! I’ve never thought AI could or should replace people, especially graphicians!

But in the boy’s defense, he does have two legs. It’s just that one of them has shriveled up quite a bit :)

If we look at Côté’s original illustration, one could also argue (in defense of the neural network that generated the new version) that the position of the boy’s leg is quite unnatural.

The model surely had to rack its artificial "brains" for quite a while, trying to figure out how to interpret that Escherian tangle between the leg and the table. It’s no wonder it decided to "straighten out" that damned leg! :]

I bet you didn't even excavate the carcass of the original painter to ask for his permission :(

The funny thing is, I specifically looked for a retro-futuristic image that was over 100 years old, so it would already be in the public domain. I dug through quite a lot of material before settling on this one. But its art style and colors didn’t really fit the overall look of the mag. So yeah, I asked ChatGPT to give it a retrowave look.

And I thought it was pretty obvious that I wasn’t trying to pass the illustration off as my own work. It was only there to break up the text and poke fun at myself.

Well, in the end, it gave the release a bit of extra exposure, so I guess that’s a good thing ;)

In fairness, it must be said that the leg in Côté’s original image is, at the very least, broken. So, it may have been straightened out by the AI in order to spare the boy from pain. ;o)

Take it as: I’m not going to explain or justify myself to you. The articles in this release clearly explain where the images in Remoded came from. But that wouldn’t put your doubts to rest anyway, would it?
added on the 2026-10-29 19:44:26 by bitl bitl
@gaspode: Yes, it’s similar to what I said earlier, but I like that you pointed out that the AI’s motive might have been to prevent harm (Asimov would be proud).

It seems that, at least in this case, a bit of AI slop turned out to be more humane than the prior human sloppiness. What a curious paradox!

Thing is: you didn’t disclose AI use here until pressed on the matter, so how can we trust you in the future? This erosion of trust is one of the key issues with genAI in any creative field.

This could have been avoided by disclosing the usage in the infofile for example. Maybe in the future you can do that if you still release somethibg that has genAI content.

Just so I can understand your line of thinking: if I publish a review of some demos in the diskmag, including screenshots, and some of those screenshots happen to contain AI-generated content, am I obligated to label the magazine as containing genAI?

As for whether you personally trust me or not, I don’t give a fuck.

Have you written even a single review of any of my demos? Clearly, you’re not interested in them. So why should I care about your opinion? You’re only interested in one thing: giving a thumb down for using AI without following some supposed disclosure rules that exist nowhere but in your own head.

You should shine a lamp in my face and remind me what happens to those who refuse to cooperate with the concentration camp administration.

No, it wasn’t the only one. For a couple of other illustrations, I also used ChatGPT to generate an intermediate result, which I then worked on further as part of a larger collage. What the AI generated and the final image included in the diskmag are simply two different pictures. But yeah, who gives a fuck, at the end of the day.

Can I go to my cell now, сomrade сommissar?

What? No. I was just interrogated by the KGB once. I’m having flashbacks.

P.S. I wasn’t trying to hide anything in the first place. I just didn’t think there was any need to disclose it, since the graphics accompanying articles in PC diskmags have never been treated as original artwork in their own right. At most, that applies to the magazine cover, background, and logo. I hope you’re not suspecting those of being AI-generated, too?

As for the rest... whether they’re photos or scanned images from a magazine... has anyone ever really cared?

I’m gonna do this in good faith with you this one time:

Quote:
Just so I can understand your line of thinking: if I publish a review of some demos in the diskmag, including screenshots, and some of those screenshots happen to contain AI-generated content, am I obligated to label the magazine as containing genAI?

You misunderstand. That genAI content you’re reviewing is not content you claimed to make, so why would anyone blame you for it?

But… why would you spend time reviewing something someone else did not make?

Quote:
As for whether you personally trust me or not, I don’t give a fuck.

It’s not just me. I’m pretty sure many sceners who dislike genAI and especially undisclosed genAI usage in demoscene productions now feel the same. Especially considering how evasive you’ve been here. Again a problem that exists only because you decided not to disclose your own genAI usage from the start.

Quote:
Have you written even a single review of any of my demos? Clearly, you’re not interested in them.

Or maybe i just haven’t seen them, or if i have, i have just not commented on them? I don’t comment on all demos i see, and most of the time i only comment on some of the ones that i personally experienced at a demoparty and which left an impression on me.

Quote:
So why should I care about your opinion? You’re only interested in one thing: giving a thumb down for using AI without following some supposed disclosure rules that exist nowhere but in your own head.

JSYK: A few years back i decided to thumb down only demos that a) feature genAI (especially if it is undisclosed) and/or b) demos that promote/support fascism.

If you’re wondering why you see thumbs down from me in various prods, those are the reasons. I’m guessing many with similar thumb behavior have similar reasons.

Lastly: please read what i wrote in the ai thread on the bbs to get an understanding why many of us dislike and oppose genAI.
