if only there is a device that just works by defa... oh, wait! ;)) - to be fair the stock android on the nexus devices is pretty free of bloat and "just works". Custom roms are still needed to add extra functionality and stuff, tho

I see custom roms more as a means to extend the lifetime of older devices + I dont feel that (recent)stock android needs any extra functionality.2¢ -

I'm crossing my fingers linage is gonna continue supporting older models. I have an Xperia L with CM12.1 here that works just fine, but might need security upgrades an bugfixes... Other ROMs seem to add unnecessary bloat shit and kinky styles I don't need... -
