Don't you think all this "Dark Soul is fucking hard, there is fuzz about it" is gimmick? I play oldschool 8bit games and I scream "Dark Souls my ass!" and I haven't played dark souls yet. Common they have bonfires. In oldschool if you died you died. Permadeath. -

A lot of oldschool games are objectively more difficult than Dark Souls. That isn't always a sign of good game design, though. Dark Souls is difficult but fair, and if you think the difficulty "gimmick" is all it has going for it, you're missing out. -
"Oldschool" difficulty in most cases meant "we only have 10 levels so let's stretch them out as long as we can" + "the trainers will make it easier anyway". -
Or "let's make this puzzle obtuse beyond cryptic and literally unsolvable so people will have to go out and buy an issue of Nintendo Power". -
or "same level, but faster and with different backdrop/color scheme" ;) -

My favourite example of bullshit difficulty is Maze of Galious on the MSX. You need to find a doll to cross a pit of water because that makes sense. How do you find the doll? Fez literally has one puzzle where people bruteforced the answer but noone knows WHY it's that. -
That's an optional puzzle, though. The game is pretty fair if you just want to play through it. It only becomes unfair if you want to reach 200% (sic) completion. -
Aren't all puzzles "optional" since "100%" just means "collect half the cubes"? :) Plus that clock puzzle with the two-week phase... -
I was playing the ROTT remake. Pretty fun shooter. But the level with extreme jumping puzzles is impossible without quicksave. I stopped there and return back when they implemented quicksave. Pretty fun now again. -
