Getting more people to vote during demoparties

category: parties [glöplog]
on a serious level: for more people to vote..

* make it possible to re-view / re-listen to entries. Nut just thumbnails - the actual entries, both gfx/music/and realtime stuff (encoded to video.)
* open voting as soon as possible - as soon as an entry has been shown in a compo
* don't impose restrictions like "you have to vote for every entry in a compo" - use median scores as default to avoid the necessity
* a well-working wifi is essential - voting can not be allowed to delay your boozing time, and you do NOT want to be sitting there, staring at a "loading spinner"
* use websites that work well on smartphones or tablets - by using Twitter's Bootstrap, for example.

It just has to be easy, it has to be fast, and it has to just work.

Paper is secure and totally trusted!

You know the biggest flaw with paper? After the compo ends, it's late, nobody wants to vote. We all head out to the field / beach / wherever and start a fire.

At that point somebody gets some wood, somebody has a lighter, but some stage between the lighter and the wood is needed. Voting sheets!

So far the voting animation and opening voting *right* after the compo works really well for me. Especially the latter.
If that's the outcome of this thread, i'm really pleased so far, since voting some hours later on a compo is really annoying. Thanks orgas@Buenz^HDemodays
What Hopper said. It really did push me a little bit more to just vote immediate, but I guess that's also because I'm sitting at my computer quite a bit more than I usually do at parties.

I did see tons of other people immediately vote after the vote screen, so there's that...

How to make people not vote at a demoparty:

x 1 2 3 4 5 Implementation Of Music And GFX
x 1 2 3 4 5 Technical Difficulty
x 1 2 3 4 5 Atmosphere/Creativity
x 1 2 3 4 5 Technical Realization

…in a 4k gfx compo!

For fucks sake Sesse don't tell me you can't send an email.

codebits has an interesting real time voting system where you get to choose yay or nay on a browser during the presentation of the competition entries. it wouldn't be a bad idea to implement such a system where you could vote in realtime, and revise your voting later.

Gargaj: Urm, what would you want in the email? (Do you have anything to do with the Bünzli 4k executable vote?)

My point was: Why do I need to deal with all this information? What does it mean if I vote something 4-5-5-5 vs. 5-4-5-5? I just want to vote, not fill out a survey.

I don't know what the voting percentages are at Assembly, but I think they've already done many of the things suggested here. 1) the voting system is accessible from public internet, not just restricted party network (so you can vote with your smartphone or whatever), 2) you can check what the entries were, right there in the voting web form, because there's a screenshot for every entry and/or a video, 3) voting is possible very soon after the entry has been shown in the compo.

more or less what i said earlier, but i'd like to quote it because it's dead on for public voting.

Make it a lottery: Everyone voting has a chance to win 100 EUR. ;o) The votes will be POURING IN, my friend.

I kinda agree with Sesse; although it's a cool concept of being able to give different ratings for different aspects, it was also a bit demotivating.

I still think the number one reason people don't vote is that they get drunk and forget. And the number two reason is that the party internet doesn't work and they didn't bring an ethernet cable.
people who didnt vote aren't allowed beer after the last compo, problem solved. NEXT!

Wait, that actually happened? I actually thought it was a joke related to this very thread :D

Well, I guess that isn't what I'd want on a voting form at 3am after many+1 beers.. on the other hand, the results would be very interesting. That's worth doing once, just for a look at how the results work out, no? I hope they publish the details.

Better still, add €100 to the ticket price, and offer GUARANTEED €100 CASH JUST FOR VOTING! You'll get 100% of people voting, and when people hear about the free €100 they'll flood into the party too!

I'm pretty sure that at one of the polish parties, if you voted, you had the chance to win the entrance fee back. No idea how that affected the voting percentage.

Not 100% sure about that either. I'm sure orgas would remember, though.
