thread closed "feature" is clearly a step back.
little bit frightening in puncto future of pouet when i see this developement.

still, i would like to see in which thread closures of the past days you see "abuse" potential and why? i even browsed through the bbs just now, and couldn't find anything except the slengpung thing and plek's useless one-sentence rant.

That is not a way to reason about things. Show me an example of NSA abusing the data they are harvesting. If you can't does that mean it is a good thing what they are doing?
"it worked fine without it many years"
... if your idea of "fine" is being seen as a notorious shithole that many of the most active proponents of the demoscene are ashamed to mention when introducing newcomers to the scene, sure.

(From what I can see, it's been used four times so far. Two threads which were started for the sole purpose of personal attacks, one which descended into Nazi gifs, and the Slengpung thread. I disagree with closing the last one: unlike the other three, there was a minimal chance that it could have turned into a constructive discussion about e.g. privacy, even if the thread's original purpose had been served.)

Guys, first you complain that you can't show Pouet to newcomers because of the oh-so-awful BBS with all its trolls. Now that there are actual countermeasures to keep the trolling on a somewhat sane level, you complain again... Oh wait, most (not all) people complaining here aren't part of the first mentioned group of sceners anyway...
Gasman ninja-posted :D
well, for me the plain feature is enough. reminds me a little about the BKA trojan thing which is able to load modules via web which is forbidden in investigations. it has the dang feature, just because you declare not to use it/use it responsibly, doesn't make it so. to quote pofalla: "hiermit erklaere ich diese diskussion fuer beendet"

"IKS is a coward" was the first case.
the past showed that those kinda threads will simply sediment. no reason to close them.

Does anyone have any statistics on new comers deciding to leave the scene immediately after seeing the pouet.net BBS?

Yes, because newcomers didn't have to deal with abusive scrolltexts, fucktros and all the other stuff which is called "trolling" nowadays back then. Which is why the scene died. Oh wait...

I mean.. if you are passionate about realtime computer graphics, demoscene, etc I cannot comprehend a person would leave all that behind because of a pouet BBS.

100% agreed.

You mean just because the scene was a shitty place 20 years ago there's no need to change that now?
The world was different in many ways back then, and so was the scene. I do a lot of outreach and educate people about the scene and it's no joke that I always feel bad when I point them to Pouet.

That said, I think the feature should exist but it should be used only under extreme circumstances.

The scene now is a shitty place because of the pouet.net bbs. Oh man...
stingray, but then again "back then" (at least for my own "back then" in the mid-90s) the communication ground were boards. where the word and the will of the sysop meant everything. one could never pull off such a mess on a board like others pull off here on a regular basis. coding fucktros and writing offensive scrollers - fine. but writing abusive messages, harassing other users etc - the sysop would kick you out. i'm not opting for such one-man dictatorship structures on nowadays websites (and there would be no reasonable ground for this). but i'm surprised that you argument in favour of people being able to mess up the place and being abusive, and use the "good old times" as an argument. back then, people couldn't afford to pull off anything like that.

Who are you to decide if the scene was shitty 20 years ago? I seriously hope you won't be able to close threads...

okay, can we please close this thread now?

nah, just kidding =)

I don't decide, I just provoke to overthink what you said. Just because people have written fucktros 20 years ago, does this justify that potential newbies are scared away from the scene because they had one look too much at the BBS?
and no, the scene was everything else than shitty 20 years ago. exactly because there was much less trolling and more serious business going on. after all, it was about developing from "local lamer" into a member of the "elite" through hard work in your own trade, be it coding, swapping, making music, or running a board. noone was considered truly serious who just had a big mouth.

fucktros fuel the feeling of competition. the bbs is mostly just a mudhole full of cynical and irrelevant shit. fucktroes were about slagging people off for scene-related reasons. most of the ranty bbs posts are about nothing, really. i don't even see what's there to compare.
added on the 2013-08-29 18:50:31 by dipswitch dipswitch
but in any case, for me it's not a big deal, if you all want the feature being reverted and the bbs blossoming again in old retarded glory, i shall shut up and wait what the admins have to say.
added on the 2013-08-29 18:57:16 by dipswitch dipswitch
So, the possibility of closing threads will magically stop the bbs from being retarded? :)
And "the two dutch topics" (the only ones I've noticed being closed down) are good examples of the things to stop, whereas very few other things posted since pouet2.0 are?
I'm not invested in any particular feature, I'm invested in Pouet. I merely got sick of the constant "Pouet is a pestilence" mantra I keep hearing at every party I go to and figured this could possibly a way the curb the idiocy. (The same way sysops used to, Stingray.)

If the majority wants it out (and we can poll this fair and square) then we'll have it out.

Suggestion: leave it in for six months, then check in with a vote at the end of six months.

Sometimes folks are just not comfortable with change.

Also, the majority may not be vocal.
