Just a little something - devices with thin screens (<480px) get an optional new mobile layout for easier browsing.

It's a work in progress so expect more CSS tweaks over time.

You can also disable it entirely at the bottom of the page.

wow, that's looking seriously broken for me (iPhone 5s iOS 7.0.3). I see the regular 'wide' layout, but every box has been collapsed to just the title (except the stats box for some reason).

Oh, and there's nothing to disable it at the bottom of the page.

what's the pixel width of that screen?
added on the 2013-10-27 16:25:10 by Gargaj Gargaj
320 points / 640 pixels (not sure which it reports)

Well it seems the (width<480) bit triggers for JavaScript but not for CSS. Thanks iPhone.

I'll take a look.

I'm guessing a bit here (years since I did any serious web dev), but according to the web inspector pouet is using a width of 980, if that helps.

Ah, there's a javascript console. It's report "screen" as 320 x 568.

How about now?
added on the 2013-10-27 16:38:52 by Gargaj Gargaj
now it's back to normal - same layout as on the desktop.

That's good - if the iPhone wants to be treated as large resolution (640px) then it will get treated as such ;)
added on the 2013-10-27 16:42:59 by Gargaj Gargaj
hmm.. but it's reporting 320px because it wants to be treated as a 320px display :D

(that's the reasoning btw - a screen this small at 640x1136 would have stupidly small text, so it reports itself as 320x568 and draws at 2x resolution. iOS dev works exactly the same, 'retina' and 'non-retina' are treated as the same resolution, but retina gets drawn at 2x res, and high-res assets get loaded for gfx)

See what I wrote above - it still takes the highes resolution CSS :)
added on the 2013-10-27 16:48:21 by Gargaj Gargaj
oh, i see! Hmm.. kind of makes sense, since if you're doing things at pixel level you want pixel measurements, while at general layout level you want something closer to physical sizes.

(And yes, this is a constant headache in iOS dev too, since you always have to know what units you're working in - as if we didn't already have enough units and coordinate systems ;)

btw, the default layout is pretty navigable on iPhone with just double-taps to zoom on the various tables. The only slightly tricky bit is selecting a topic on the BBS, since that part is quite wide and the lines are quite dense - selecting the right line requires accurate tapping.

on my s4 active (fullhd 5" screen) i now get the desktop site in the default browser and firefox and the mobile css in chrome. I prefer the later one even with my big-ish display because i dont have to zoom and scroll horizontally.

Can you please fix it so that when I switch to the desktop version (using the link on the bottom of each page), that it STAYS on the desktop version? Clicking a BBS topic switches it back to the "mobile friendly"-version, and that sucks donkeyballs. :)
