Module/Scenemusic database using checksums

category: music [glöplog]

Is there some scenemusic database around that tracks content by using checksums? (sha1, md5, etc)

Something that has been bugging me lately is lots of modules are made with various flavors of protracker doesn't sound correct if they aren't played with the correct version and its pretty much impossible to tell/know which one it is.

So something that would be cool is a db that tracks with checksum (+size of file to really reduce collisions next to none) As metadata one would have the exakt version of pt used for the tune (this of course need to be inputed manually by someone into the database) and also other metadata (general info about the tune, length, demo that its used in, etc could be added)

Once all this is done (tm) having some for of api so players could query the database (just hash the file on disk (so even if its renamed by the user it will work correct) and do a lookup to the db and get back some proper data)

The Mod Archive stores MD5 for all files and IIRC you could query files by hash using the API, but I doubt m0d would be currently up for implementing something like that... Sounds like a cool idea, though, something I had in mind for quite a while too.
Yeah it would take some effort to do it for sure. Also as I looked around it seems that there are lots of various sites (mod archive, modland, hvsc, etc) and have a more unified "metadata" collection for all scene music would be really cool (regardless of format)

I'm not at all saying that all the sites doesn't serve a purpose but having the general info about the music on a more centralized place would be really cool. Something like anidb.net (that only stores metadata for anime/releases/etc) would be neat

@emoon: We may be building something along the lines of what you're looking for, at least as far as metadata goes - though the checksum idea is kind of neat, and would probably work great at least for tracker music and the like. Feel free to stop by #demozoo on ircnet and have a chat :)
