Oh, and the main point: I don't like people liking bad music simply because it is of one particular genre or style. Bad music is bad music, good music is good music.

..and Sander has leading anyway. :)

the type of "chiptune" that would get mainstream has little/nothing to do with the demoscene anyway - a nintendo vst making some bleeps and bloops with a woman singing/shouting over the top. the demoscene is about technical prowess, individuality, creativity. pop music is about image, cheese and accessibility. i think a pure sid song or amiga chiptune won't ever get into the charts for that reason (and instrumentals are rarely as popular as vocal music anyway).

maybe proper tracked/"sceney" chiptunes could grow into a reasonably-sized genre (like dubstep or metal - the sounds wouldn't appeal to most chart-listeners but they are still popular genres), but whether any of us really want that to happen (or care either way) is doubtful imho.

Exin: probably animal noises or some wierd shit? :P
Also: I think it's pretty far-fetched to claim that chiptunes are mainstream. A few ripped phrases in a Nelly Furtado-song doesn't make the genre itself mainstream/trendy :)

But really, I think the major difference in how "true chip" and "nu-chip" sound comes from the attitude towards the sound. In the former, you aim at using the chip efficiently to create rich sound, but in the latter, one just enjoys the "bleeps and bloops" in the rough way how they come out, with no intent for musical or technical elaboration.

I mention this difference (of "optimalism" vs "reductivism") in my recent text at http://www.pelulamu.net/countercomplex/computationally-minimal-art/.

If that wasn't a rhetorical question, try the search box on the main page.
