anyone know a method to ban someone execution-style? just to hear them whimper a bit before they get logged out.

You do realise he's talking about me here don't you? Not the guy who posted child porn.

I also wonder about people posting scat-porn in the random image thread.

Somethingawful used to do something they called hellbanning. The person you ban can still login and post, but the only person who can actually see their posts is themselves so they're stuck in this terrible limbo wondering why nobody ever responds to anything they say anymore.

I guess admins could view the hellbanned user's posts for entertainment.

I have thought of that way, too, Insectecutor, but it is really *mean* so I would never do that to a person if I were an admin here.

I'd rather make "banned" peoples avatars look phat. for at least a week. *muhahaha*

sooo.. on topic... have the WWF elite panda squat teams already raided anyone's home ?

kelsey: true that. it's one of the threads you can barely look at nowadays. at least we still have the demoish images thread ;)

insectecutor: so they log out, refresh, aaaand...?

Gargaj: hehe, apart from cookies and ip-range blocks there's pbly not much one can do.

BB Image

afair MAC addresses are just "local" between peer-to-peer connections. may some network expert here correct me if I'm wrong.

One solution would be to implement a "block user" and maybe even a "block thread" feature. This way we can all have Pouet to our personal tastes and just enjoy the positive aspects of the site.
added on the 2009-12-14 03:19:36 by Wade Wade
Wade: hehe I had that "block feature" idea, too. instead of completely banning a user, just revoke a part of his/her rights for a certain amount of time.
also: in the end, the "block thread" feature is you :) and you can already disable the images to make pouet.net "work-safe".

regarding the "detect user" thingy: I guess there are a lot more indicators that could be used to track "you" on the internetz. one of the reasons I do not like my web browsers to use scripting (not that I have anything to hide but spare me the spam and "complete online transparency" that potentially come with that)

So I really wonder why it caused such a consternation among all of you...
It was just a single thread and I thought it would've been forgotten after two days...

It's far from being the first time you posted shit /sick stuff here (despite the warnings), under ATH500 and under 2 other fake accounts, so yeah, at some point it starts to piss people off, especially since you obviously have nothing to do with the demoscene in the first place as Dipswitch said.

Maybe you should consider visiting a website more suited to your needs, like 4chan for example.

Indeed, no matter what decisions the moderators make, there will always be someone who disagrees so a block feature will spare them any blame.

I think it will also discourage users from trolling and provocation in the long term too because when they realise nobody is reacting to their posts, they'll realise how pointless it is. Likewise, I'll have no reason to rant about the invasion of non-sceners and 4chan idiots. :)

I didn't know about the disabling images until a day or two ago, but you can bet I have that turned on now!

How about limiting people's use of the forum based on their activity elsewhere on the site? There's no real reason anyone's "bbs topics opened" should be allowed to exceed their "latest 1st comments" (in ATH500's case, 29 vs. 19).

This is a really bad idea. This would make more noise on the prod comments... it is like telling people "comment fast any prod without even watching it so you can post on the bbs".

In my humble opinion, it would be really difficult to have a "serious" forum about demoscene with a good amount of people writing on it.

By other hand... I've just thought in a really cool feature and I'm going to write a post about it.

if you want to block an user

If you want to block a thread... just STAY THE FUCK OUT. Nobody forces you to open that thread! Ignore it!
1) don't let new users open threads for a month or something.
2) make categories, and only let, say, two threads from each category show up on the front page at a time.

Hellbanning owns! Slowly people start wondering why the fuck nobody is replying to their posts. I hellbanned a dude on another forum I'm on, and the guy kept on posting for about 6 months before he finally realized something was wrong.

After that we made a personal hellban feature where you could hellban anyone you wanted from the forum.
added on the 2009-12-14 10:11:33 by okkie okkie
Okkie: doesn't that make for terribly fragmented and disconnected threads? Half of the people don't know the posts of half the others, and nobody knows what the fudge is going on.

It works better than you think!
added on the 2009-12-14 10:58:14 by okkie okkie
(mostly because nobody actually hellbanned anyone)

hellbanning works peachy when its a members-only forum; otherwise everyone can just log out, see if their posts are visible and create a new account accordingly.
added on the 2009-12-14 12:43:51 by Gargaj Gargaj
Well, you can "round up" the visibility. It isn't a big deal if the whole netblock sees your spam. 99,99,99% of the internet still doesn't.

I wouldn't do that to normal users though (just spammers). It's a pretty antisocial trick to do and that kind of stuff can escalate quickly.

You dont know me. I dont have a scene nick and never had an account on here until I made one just now. I work for a multimedia company in the UK and check the demos and posts on this site some times for ideas and inspiration.

I opened that pic post too and it was fucking sick! For your information I reported the kiddy porn to ASACP.org, IWF.org.uk and www.cyberangels.org but unlike the chap from bitfellas I dont give a fuck if this site is monitored or taken down after the shit Ive been through over those pics

I reported Pouet becos Pouet is where I found the pics,. Acting like the innocent victim dont wash with me becos its not the first time Ive seen that sort of discusting crap on this site. If you have a prob with being reported do something to control the twats who are posting on here.

I was going to let it go and never visit this site again but I read this post and some of the cocky and sarcastic attitudes have pissed me rite off!! Some of you idiots dont get how serious this is and should learn to keep your stupid comments to yourself and get a fucking life!

You mite think it’s a big joke but it wasn’t a joke for me when I was using my works computer and had to tell my boss about those pics. Or when we had to stay behind with the police to check through all the cached images. If a technician found that stuff on our hard drives me or the whole company could be prosecuted or I could of lost my job at the VERY LEAST! Me and my boss had to file a report with the local police and they took the PC and a load of my work away which cost us money. Still think its something to joke about? Luckily becos we reported it straight away our asses are covered.

So heres the deal, if I see kiddy porn, pics of dead bodies or any sick shit like that again Ill forward this site to anti-pedophile forums and groups on Facebook and encourage the lynch mobs there to keep reporting it to the ASACP, IWF and more until its blocked or investigated.

You have been warned! Dont let me see anything like that on here again.
