As I'm finished with school pretty soon, I have to look out for a university (I don't have to do civilian service or go to the army...) as soon as possible. I thought about the university of Kaiserslautern which is nearby, or maybe Karlsruhe. I want to study computer science. Do you have any recommendations? I don't think that my parents want to pay tution fees again...

If you have two brothers who did that already, you don't have to.

Why "again"? Also, you might wanna look into the possibility to study a semester abroad (Erasmus et. al). As for the Uni/FH, it depends on their NC requirements and what experience you wanna get out of it.

Either you fail the army health/screening test or the three brothers rule, as explained earlier in the thread. Apparently, it's pretty much random these days. Some people "fail" the test because they try really hard (by being uncooperative, inventing diseases, willfully trigger allergies right before the test etc.), while some people "fail" although they are perfectly healthy and even want to go to the army.

From what I've heard, Karlsruhe is quite good regarding computer science. But that's merely hearsay. I knew a guy that studied in Kaiserslauten, however, and he said is was good (but last time I spoke to him was 8 years ago)

And since you seem to live in southern Germany anyway, I assume you get along with south German mentality. I had some problems when I studied there.

But IMHO, you should at least consider deliberately choosing a university far from home, it's a great experience and helps you getting more independent.

Oh, and fuckings to you for not having to waste 13 months of your life as Zivi :-)

Well, I don't get any Zivi money either, which is not so nice. :( :P

And hey, if I study in Kaiserslautern, I can see every home match of the FCK, which is great. :D

You could apply for BaFöG or *gasp* find some work. Also, those fees are still pretty damn low in Germany (500€ per semester in most cases). This might not stay that way forever. ;)

Stanford is quite good.

Yeah... €5 per 8h-day. (Today it's €10). You get a little bit more for eating and commuting. I think in the 13 months I earned 1800 DM total (around 900€)

BTW, Saga. If you want fun and many party opportunities, study in Berlin.

anyhow, don't ask where, ask what. there are a lot of different angles on computer science. i went to study in eindhoven because liked their religious focus on formal correctness of software. deadline/domage left the same uni for exactly that reason - taste differs. even though it is impossible to imagine exactly what you'll learn four years from now, tasting the "attitude" of a uni is really worth it.

i really recommend visiting some open days, because of this - all uni websites look and tell the same, so they're no good. it's really worth the investment, time and money wise. also talk to people you know studying cs at different places, ask what it's like, what they're learning, and how they feel about it.

do also look abroad; especially austria and switzerland if studying in german is your thing. joghurt has it right, going places really is an enriching experience. it's fun, and you learn a lot about yourself and about others, and about how to deal with all that.
