Amiga vs Atari

category: general [glöplog]
I look forward to it. Why will it take so long? Need to get a custom case badge made up? ;-)

I AM IN TASMANIA (on holiday)! and ALL MY STUFF IS AT MY HOME IN VICTORIA (awaiting my return in early Jan)! THERE IS A LARGE BODY OF WATER BETWEEN ME AND MY HOME, NOT TO MENTION ALL OF THE KILOMETERS!

Is it all clear now?!

I should have entitled this thread Anakirob vs the rest of the Amiga Scene huh.
So is the "512ST" with you now, or back at home?

Well, DUH!

You may be good at logic in programming, but logic in conversation seems to escape you.

So therefore IT IS IN VICTORIA AND I AM IN TASMANIA!
Ahh OK.

Well never mind. Wherever it is, whatever it is, it is not an ST512.

I must concede that an ST512 without any disk that I can boot from is no more useless than an A500, wb1.3, 512k and no disk I can boot from.

I WILL ASK THIS QUESTION AGAIN

CAN I USE AN ADF WRITER ON MY AMIGA TO WRITE A DISK IMAGE WHICH WILL WORK ON AN ST?

Seriously, I would like to know. Because without a disk I can boot from I can't do anything. A serial or parallel connection obviously won't do anything until I can get the software on to the ST.

And now back to our flaming

I must point out that despite having MIDI and a faster 68000 the AtariST is 16-bit, and the A500 is 24/32-Bit.

The SD card reader is a PCMCIA peripheral, so not for anything older than an A600, sorry. Get yours from the afore mentioned Amiga dealer.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as "amiga512"

And for the record: The price I paid for my NEW A1200, aouund $450AU inc. postage, was worth every penny.

Mount PC0: (or use CrossDos if you only have an 1.3 Amiga available) on your Amiga and format a disk as 720k PC DOS disk. Your 520 errm 512 ST should be able to read such disk without any problem.

AHHH. Thanks stingray! I was a little bemused at how Xeron could be 100% certain that I had no ST512. When I am certain that I do have an ST with 512k.

Until I realised that it is ACTUALLY labeled ST520! Now I get it.

You may all have a chuckle at my expense, as I am currently doing also.

Boy is my face red!
anakirob:

how can a500 be a 32bit machine when the 68000 has a 16 bit data bus and 24 bit address bus?

please stfu right now or you'll provoke the wrath of ancient lake trolls who, upon their awakening, will destroy the world!! .. and both your atari and amiga512.

A500 is 16 bit. The CPU has a 16bit databus, the chipset has a 16bit databus. By anyones definition, it is a 16bit machine.

It also has 32-bit CPU registers and instructions, which is a massive advantage over many of the other 16-bit platforms from the same period. Just calling it a "16-bit platform" wouldn't make for a fair comparison to, say, 286 PCs.

I don't think the width of the data bus is a very good measure of the overall "bitness" of the system. And besides, which (part of the) bus is relevant? Would modern PCs be "1-bit computers"?

bittiness depends on the width of the GPRs. 68000 is 32bit.

but excuse me.. that is a 512STFM, not a 512ST ;)

@earx Nonono, its the ST512 FM, as made by Sinclair Research a couple of weeks ago. Its a 33-bit computer, just to make sure it beats MorphOS-based systems and other abominations.

With the risk of just trollfeeding..

Anakirob:

It is most likely you have TOS in ROM on your ST, then you don't need any boot disk, just insert an empty formatted 720kb MS-DOS disk and it will reach the desktop by itself. About writing ST disk images to disk from an Amiga, yes it can be done. I know Buzz/Exotica does it. But I'm not sure which software he's using. The "ST" image format is just a raw track/sector dump while the MSA is a little more complex (empty sector compression).

If you have one of the very few persons with a such early ST which loads TOS from floppy.. Then do you want to sell the machine to me? :-) I've never actually seen one of those, and I've had loads of Ataris during the years.

evil: i owned a 520 ST for a short while. it's my least favourite ST. the only good thing about was the location of the joystick ports. but it's a nice looking museum piece, i guess.
