Demos on Xbox 360 - distribution opens up

category: general [glöplog]
Microsoft has opened up "Community games channel" where XNA prods can go up after peer review, and anybody with an Xbox 360 can access them.

So, now we have a standardized high end platform and ready distribution for demos. XNA is still not the most optimal solution code-wise, but here's some great potential to reach a large audience.

Discuss!

I think the title of this topic is quite misleading. They only talk about games. Whether or not these "peers" will accept non-interactive stuff like demos as games is uncertain.

Make a simple breakout clone with a massive intro on it?

I was discussing this with Microsoft's XNA team earlier this year, and I think the intention was also to promote content that is not "strictly games".

I think we'll see once somebody tries.

BTW, if anybody needs XNA Creator's Club codes, we have some left over from Microsoft sponsorships. Email me...

well, we already HAVE some XNA demos, so we dont need much effort to see and find out...

it's in the right direction i guess.

about 'lobbying' to make demos accepted : there is the LiS precedent, and abyss why not proposing (with the agreement of concerned groups of course) to release the former ASM07 360 demos through this new channel ?

btw as we can see with the last X 2008 results, sceners love having some cherished frozen platforms to push challenges always further... would it be conceivable to consider the X360 as a fixed PC-like platform for a fair and enjoyable compo ? of course the popularity and longevity of c64 and amiga won't ever be matched again, but what do the coders who have already coded on X360 (for games or XNA asm compo) think ?

the X360 is a fixed PC-like platform :)

I don't see why another long-lasting platform like c64 can't happen again, surely it just needs a fixed platform that doesn't evolve (like the pc, and perhaps amiga too) that is very common, and easy to code on (as in it has an ide or something, rather than it runs blitz basic).

hmf, i wonder if you can opt to offer for free

Having a fixed platform like Xbox 360 is nice but not everyone wants to code in C#. Furthermore, isn't it trivial to port XNA stuff for Windows PC anyway?
XNA stuff can mostly crosscompile between XBOX and Windows (i only needed a few ifdefs)

If that is the license you need to develop give it to me and I'll buy a 360. They're cheap now :D

A fixed PC-like platform sounds cool. on the other hand, why the fuck would anyone want to pay for a demo?

also a good tip to know: http://www.xboxstorageupgrade.com

downloading demos through Live would need some enough space, so if you've bought the cheap arcade/core sku without any HDD, MS is sending you a refurbished 20GB HDD for only 15€ / $20 (retail price at amazon is 83€ for example) so that you can be able to update your firmware to the upcoming NXE dashboard :)

once you've modded the xbox, you cant watch demos.

Gargaj: i'm not talking about modding/flashing the optical drive firmware (whose main purpose is to make dvd-r be seen as retail pressed dvd) but about officially upgrading the main firmware which holds the OS/dashboard :)

ah, the coverflow+mii thing

yeah, not groundbreaking, but the whole system will be even more oriented to Live (downloadable) content, so i hope demos will find their deserved place there :)

btw abyss why wasn't the '07 XNA compo repeated in '08 ? it has been pretty successful! ok MS wanted to promote silverlight this year, but tell them they need to promote the 'reborn' X360 again in '09 ;p

it was, actually.
