why is there so few Mac demos, compaired to Win?

category: general [glöplog]
For anyone looking to make 4k intros on a Mac, I'd tip them in the direction of Core Audio..

Majority of Mac's have crappy graphics adapters by default. For example, even Google Earth bugs on my Macmini. This will probably change after OSX 10.6 is being released, or so they say.

Coding on Mac isn't any harder than on PC. You can even skip XCode entirely if you don't like fancy IDE's. Textmate is pretty good for everything in the end.

Ok try QuartzCompo tool within XCode dev tools
melw: the majority of pcs have shitty intel onboard rubbish too, in all fairness. It's just a pity there's no 'mid range' mac that's upgradable with a video card.

The one and only reason is that Windows+PC is what the mainstream uses currently and the scene follows that. It's always been like that, maybe with a lag of a few years. The tools or the hardware don't really have any importance in it.

that said, it follows that the tools etc are better because the mainstream uses it :)

If that's the case, the mainstream is swinging steadily towards osx so the tools should steadily improve. It'll take quite a few years before everyone shifts over though.

Oh come on...
Well, windows market share is going down, osx market share is going up. I've a feeling linux share is going up too, but pretty slowly in comparison. It'll take years at the rate it's changing, but that's the way it's headed. Perhaps in that time microsoft can put out an os that makes people happy again, or linux can become a bit more practical for the mainstream. Who knows.

the 'other' scene is mainly win (linux is used 'only' for distro infrastructure), why would the demoscene migrate to osx ?

personally i like mac groups like Spönz who almost always offers win ports at the same time :)

I'm not sure on ports. It's great to have ports, I've complaints about them (infact, more osx ports please!) but making stuff multiplatform means you can't take advantage of whatever makes the platform different. Which is a big part of the appeal of doing alternative platform stuff to me :)

converting to mac requires a pretty big shift in the brain. With XP some coders may have lost patience with microsoft and began converting to mac/linux. But now that vista is here the situation has changed. Maybe they stick around with vista or... btw. iPhone sales may also increase mac sales.

the real problem with linux is, we're in all in the demoscene for the chicks - and there simply arent enough girls using linux to make it worth our while.
perhaps this will help.

I'd guess vista pushed more people to other platforms than xp did.

lol smash this document itself is so sexist and paradoxal, it can't be serious!

the Mac has always been branded as the creative platform

Today's sceners tend not to be brand whores.

I'm on my 2nd mac laptop (replaced the flawed g4 ibook that needed a mobo replacement every 6 months due to that design flaw smug mac owners never talk about). The situation of XCode and OpenGL has not improved, not compared to VS and the incredibly rich library of the DXSDK. Sure all the interesting heavy lifting is done in shaders now but this other stuff matters.

Demosceners want to reach the largest possible audience. That's my guess.

Other than that I can't find a reason. Windows has been obsolete for years, is not compatible with anything else and is barely usable without installing CygWin.

DX is a piece of crap that should have disappeared in 1998 :)

I think it's ok to reply to the above post using this word:

LOL.

Maybe it was some form of sarcasm?

maybe it was some kind of dream bubble?

Too bad this is mostly related to the sale of laptops (mostly Macbooks with shitty Intel graphics) in North America.

Are positive comments from "unproven" people welcome?

Sure :) But i give it 10 times more value, if the thumb up comes from someone who i respect. Or a thumb down :)

And hey, maybe you all should start making mac demos that run on that crappy piece of intel, it's not THAT bad you know ;) You just need to do some optimizing and clever tricks, instead of throwing an extra million polygons into the screen.

rainmaker: small correction needed there. You just need to do some optimising and clever tricks, and a large amount of praying that you don't hit one of the many driver bugs that seem to plague the intel chips on osx :(

Having said that, I've come across nasty ones with nvidia too. Seems ATI is actually the best for drivers on mac. And I hear ATI has better core image optimisation, so a mid-range ATI card will outperform a high end nvidia one for quite a few jobs.

just finished sorting results in SPSS from street poll:
"why is there so few Mac demos, compaired to Win ?"
1-Mac's are fucking expensive here (87%)
2-I can't find warez for it so I won't buy one (10%)
3-No opinion (3%)

in the end it seems less people buys it, could be a reason...

4-A mac is a mac is a mac...and in the end nothing more and nothing less than a PC.
