In any case, a lot of things are presented as facts without much support. I keep reading about world record this, world first that, never quite sure whether it is being said while actually meaning it. (Most of what is being said thusly is always dependant on important restrictions, especially when it is been said that the amiga is the first this or that)

Actually, without the references, freax is useless as a research tool. (If anybody wanted to use it for that purpose)

Freax not only lacks references, but also an index.

After reading a biography of Bill Gates, I find this a bit difficult to believe since from reading I got the impression that Gates was a typical hacker himself in his teenage years. But maybe that's what you're meaning with the next sentence: "Perhaps this is what they call unassimilated teenage frustration."

I believe what he actually mispercieved as the aforementioned "address" was the Open Letter to Hobbysts, a complainment about warezing basically.

You might not believe, but it's actually true. Now I can't dig up the reference right from my chest pocket, but he actually wanted to outlaw hobby programming. The public letter Microsoft wrote was later parodized by simply replacing the word "programming" with "scientific research", resulting in a completely nonsense proposal.

As for Mr. Gates himself, yes, he was regularly visiting a psychiatrist in his teenage years, and calling him a typical hacker is like calling Adok a diskmag editor.

You're welcome to add your comments. I actually don't remember why I haven't consulted you before writing about Nah Kolor, but I remember that I got everything from the Nah Kolor story article you've written years ago. Probably I found that enough as a source, and did not want to bother you.

As for the index, that goes for Volume 2. Remember, Volume 1. is just half of a book. Even page numbering will continue where it ended in Vol.1.

That open letter thing is a quite different thing. That made Gates ridiculous in 1976. This "ban hobby coding" thing came out in 2000. I am not exactly sure if it was Gates' personal idea, but it was M$ behind it, so he was probably not very far from it.

friend of mine was reading freax which he got from the local library, and commented me that for a person like him, who does not have so strong computer background, it would be really great to have a dvd accompanying the book, so that he could get a real glimpse of what the book is telling about.

magic: I think these compilations do not suit Freax as they do not cover the early demos. Are there any c64 demos at all in those?

One of the great features of Freax is that the author tells a story of how demos evolved over the years.

unfortunately downloading an emulator + demos can be a bit too much of a trouble for someone who is just slightly intrested and doesn't know that much about computers..

and yeah, dvd compilations of new demos do not help at all.

There are such DVDs. Digital Memories is also a very good compilation of C-64 demos. Also I'll bring copies of the United Force C-64 and Plus/4 demo collections to Assembly. They will cost 5 euros each.

tomcat, yeah but my friend was more of after something that would be attached to the cover of the book, so that it would be part of it. for someone who is not in the scene, it's not so obvious where to look for stuff. though, i just was thinking that maybe making lists of demos at youtube or some downloadable videos could be good for those who are too inept with computers to run a demo.
