AtariSt music rulez!

category: general [glöplog]
AtariSt melodies are the best, ain't they? I cry everytime I listen them on Nectarine.

My favorites musics are: ST>C64>PC>Amiga>CPC>Zx Spectrum>rest.

I may have forgotten NES, SNES and ze rest who have really wonderfull stuff, but I am writting only from some computers now. And this are regardless the sound hardware or so, but only the melodies and musicians I hear. And I can truly stand and actually love the YM sound, unlike some C64/Amiga sceners. Strange. Wonderfull tunes exists even in PC speaker (Xenon 2 for example).

But the AtariSt makes me cry. Who cares about the sound quality, they are wonderfull!

well... i don't know where to start...

it's sure some Atari ST music are really great (like all the "DBA music" by Scavenger) but i have to say here the thing everybody know but nobody want to say:

ATARI's YM SOUNDCHIP IS LAME AS POSSIBLE

but that doesn't mean Atari musician havn't done good thing with it...

nothing can beat the great and unforgivable c64's SID-6581 (imho).

ha, one other very great chipsound is the FM synthesis from the x68000 (some evil 80'~90' japanese computer).

and i course it's unbelievable that someone can prefer PC music than Amiga and on top of that take the example of Xenon2 played by SPEAKER.

<insert puke smiley here>

i think lots of people will have the same opinion, let's start some new scene war...

:)

i'm just wondering why the ST is in 1st position in the Optimus charts and the CPC is 5th, because that both machine share the SAME soundchip, also tons of the CPC songs are ripped from Amiga (mainly) and Atari songs...

speaker sound is the real thing, you bastard musician

As I said, this chart doesn't take in account the sound hardware. Well yes, YM is lame compared to SID, but I still can stand it unlike others, stand is not the right word here. It happens that I hear some famous ST tunes and really don't get bored listening to them, but with some great SID ones I still get bored after a while.

CPC is 5th because I can't remember much preety good tunes as the ones AtariSt musicians produced.

I was about to write either C64>Amiga>PC or C64>PC>Amiga, having in account the tunes I use to listen to. I kept the second, still it was hard to decide. I compare modern or oldschool tunes and I am more keen on listening tunes from scene musicians (either tracker or MP3) regardless, possibly I haven't heard much of the Amiga ones.

And the PC Speaker example was just to say that I can personaly still enjoy an old melody, regardless the hardware or the technique. Others can't stand it..

As a scene observer I observed my taste, regardless the sound chip or the machines I am into, that from all the rest I listen in Nectarine, I always have the greatest times when an AtariSt tune pops in :)

Anyways, I am wondering about the charts of personal taste from other people..

something is missing here...I am more keen on listening tunes from ("PC" is missing here) scene musicians..

Rez: you are right that the YM chip is lame, but I want to emphasize what ST musicians have achieved and show that what they are alot better than the 'not bad' status you seem to give them.

Atari ST had the lamest piece of shit soundchip ever, only beaten in lameness by the PC speaker and possibly the very first generation of 8 bit. It was outdated already when the ST first arrived in 1985.

But the ST musicians took the poor old YM to greater heights every step on the way. First digidrums/samples, then buzzers, then sidsound 'emulation' using timer interrupts. Eventually even modulated waves. And the development still goes on today.

That's only the technical side. In terms of musical skill.. Indeed Atari ST music started as bad c64 rip-offs but eventually grew into something new and different. Scavenger, Jess, 505 and Tao tunes (to name but a few) are not anything like C64 or even platforms with the same YM (AY) chip like MSX or the ZX. I take my hat off for these ST musicians.

I largely share Optimus' opinion although I'd prefer Amiga music above PC. On the other hand, I'm not really aware of many modern developments in PC music.

Oh, and sometimes the SID sounds more crispy in my ears than some YM tunes ;P

Even today's artists still use SIDs (SIDstation etc)... it's not about fidelity :)

Earx: I really like the good old sound of the YM, even without the use of buzzers, digidrums or sid emulation. Of course, the capabilities of the YM are very weak compared to Paula (Amiga's), especially when it comes to things more advanced than mere chiptunes, but it has its identity with its very peculiar sounds.

One can like classical music concerts and yet like Amiga chiptunes and yet like Atari chiptunes as well. One of them has the obvious and undisputed lead when it comes to audio quality and yet one can appreciate the 3 of them.

That's probably why some people still enjoy producing Sid tunes, MODs or XMs whereas they could produce high-quality mp3's with almost no hardware capability limits.

Too bad that fanatical rez is too narrowminded to understand that not everybody is supposed to share his very own tastes and that diversity is what makes all these things interesting and appealing, each one with its advantages, drawbacks and their particularities ;)

rez: and yes, I also like amiga chiptunes very much (future composer, AHX, etc) but that you already know ;)

keops: well, you know all like a lot atari music too :)
i just saying the c64 chipset is better, and also there's MORE great music made on c64 and Amiga than on Atari... i'm just talking about ammount and overal quality, it's there's really great Atari songs who are far better than most of c64 & Amiga songs (you know i'm a great fan of all Scavenger tunes, and Madmax's "There are many ship in mongolia" is one of my alltime favourite chiptune :).
