Possible PAiN-Charts Face-Lifting: Request For Comments

category: general [glöplog]
Hey there,

Combining feedback from you PAiN readers with our own ideas and outcome of various chats & discussions, we thought that it could be about time to revamp the PAiN charts, bring them to a new level, make them modern and fitting the today's scene. It's been quite some time since the charts had major changes from issue to issue, people wanted new categories, a top20, .. and so on.

The following list is neither definite nor complete or anything. It's a list of ideas we've collected. If we change the charts, we might inplement one or more of these ideas and changes. Also, we prefer to have your opinion on our idea - and in the ideal case you also have own ideas you'd like to share and discuss. Preferably, you're going to make use of the quote function to avoid losing the red line ;-)

  1. Have a top20 (top25, top15, ...) in every issue of PAiN - this would, however, require significant higher numbers of voters (so move your ass once we've finished the changes)
  2. New categories like musicdisks, parties, .. (your suggestions)
  3. Additionally or alternatively have categories that change with every issue
  4. Instead of having an own registration/login, support the scene_id thing in one way (as pouet and scene.org do)
  5. Dropdowns with productions from the last two (three, ten, whatever, ...) years (for this, a coop-eration with pouet would be required, like accessing the pouet data in raw format if possible)
  6. A way to filter results by latest release date of a group, so you can f.e. remove the results of all groups that haven't released anything the last year.
  7. ...

Additional ideas, detailed discussions, .. are more than welcome! I know you people on here can write a lot, so show that you can also think, suggest and discuss. :-)

Thanks,
Unlock/Vantage/Padua

1. top20
2. parties would be nice - tho we all know the undisputed winner :)
3. most drunken scener in Worldcharts was nice :)
4. this is a technical issue.
5. i dunno... dropdowns "suggest" things... i prefer not.

additionally i'd like to suggest something like an email-notification in case the voting is open (optional) so people dont forget about it.

also how about including the latest charts results next to the voteform?
added on the 2005-01-31 21:10:57 by Gargaj Gargaj
also, how about some photos/screenshots about the top placing entries/people?
added on the 2005-01-31 21:15:23 by Gargaj Gargaj
also, why the fuck am i so enthusiastic about this?

-top 20 makes no sense at all when only 100 people vote
-charts for diskmags make no sense either since they are too few

it allows people to have more insight when the next issue comes out (imho)

@keops:
* a modern voting system could increase the number of voters? but you're of course right, as i mentioned in my initial post, a top20 would require far more voters
* right, and since it's PAiN, it could not even be in the own charts. what a shame ;-) but there a plenty of other possible categories. looking forward to read everybodies ideas.

@gargaj
* latest charts results next to the voteform would possibily cause everybody to vote for the same people again and again? what do you poueters think?
* screenshots/photos would mean a hell lot of work, but for the sake of it, it could be nice and possibily even be worth the work
* 5. even if the dropdowns would contains all entries that can be found on pouet? what about offering the dropdown, with the possibility to override the selection with an input field for those that don't life what the dropdown contains? but then again, such a dropdown would be very big :)
* 4. sure, but would people appreciate this? would it even allow for something like "click on pouet to add a demo to your pain-votesheet"?

what for? even more biased charts and less spontaneity?

Going from top 10 to top 20 would only allow namevoting/friendsvoting to be even more visible in those charts, especially when you only have 100 voters that all know each others.
And I doubt you manage to increase that number significantly unlock :)

I'm not sure this has its place on pouet. Pouet already has shitloads of tops, rankings, popularity stats...

Cool ideas. Well, I'd like to see some options like "all time bla" and "top bla of the last 12 (or fifteen) months".

Please include a "Diskmag contributor of the last 6 months with the most clue", I have a strange feeling writers for PAiN cannot whin in that charts. ;)

Btw, have you guys noticed the austrian dude is inferior to the swiss dude when it comes to using BB-Code in a post for a diskmag. ;)
Give me a symbian pain-datapacks reader :)

no dropdown prod choice please. too suggestive.

i'd love to see a parties category, and a lamer category (like in worldcharts) would be pretty cool to. let's boil some blood!

Having every demo from pouet database in one dropdown box, would make the box fucking huge. And it would take ages to load, since even pouet seems to be a bit slow occasionally nowadays :)

I've had the same thought as teel. One solution would be not making a drop down, but allowing the voter to enter the prod id at pouet. (Similar to the login at ojuice where you enter your ojuice id.)

I actually like the idea of merging the pain (or any annual) voting system into pouet... Many have requested that the pouet top 10 should not only have an all time listing, and a diskmag would be a nice way of presenting it (and of course the current standing would not influence the voting). It would probably also significantly boost the number of voters.

Hehe, it took me hours to figure out how this BB-code stuff works.. Damned. I would have preferd HTML or possibily AUA (the PAiN markup language ;-))

Which would mean that you miss all the great diskmag feeling. But yes, a databack reader would be possible for any operating system as long as you don't want to have the engine with all fancy hacks Pdoom did since 1999 there too.

Even if there is a hell lot of prods inside _and_ with the optional text input where you can fill in what you want?

That would be something for the changing categories idea, I'd say?

Well, Zone is right when he says that back in time, voting for the own group/prods/group members was something nobody did. In PAiN we disallowed it with the clause "except if you're extremly good" ;-)

That idea is something I start to like more and more. Tho, it would mean some work from the Pouet-masters ;-)

Please write "runner ups" to the charts, like "x" and "y" ALMOST made it :)
...which is my point of having top15/20 instead of 10 :)

and for gods sake, segregate into oldschool and newschool charts, both for people and prods.

call a prod "old" if it's more than 3 years old, "oldschool" people can be read as 'inactive'.
Yeah, i've been disappointed to see gargaj when i excepted memon.

A top 20 may be a little bit less static and may increase people's interest for it (some more mugs wouldn't hurt) but may require to release it more times / year (maybe 4/year), more voters and maybe more people to vote for.

You should add an alternate colorscheme, the white on black is tiring for the eyes (also i think the background picture have too much contrast, at least, last issue's one was). We discussed this somewhere else already.

voting many times per year gets abit boring. specially considering the scene has only 3 high release surges per year: xmas, easter, summer. maybe a good alternative would be to relegate pain to 2 normal diskmag issues (also with charts+party reports) at the end of easter and summer madness. and one smaller one, more focused on charts of the year at the end of the year. ofcourse this is all more or less academic since we all know how easy it is for issues to get delayed for months when contributions arent high enough to motivate the editors.

dominei: two very good ideas (the <i>almost</i>-idea and the oldschool/newschool seperation), i take it to my notes ;-)
