The Gathering versus Mekka Symposium

category: general [glöplog]
lug00ber: well, as I said, people don't get interested in the demoscene because some people they don't know force them to watch demos they don't want to watch. Which probably is the case at most large-scaled LANs. So hence, there would be very little fresh sceners, as in "we got the interest at last year's tg, this time we want to participate".

Who said anything about forcing?
Just because something is playing on the bigscreen doesn't mean you HAVE to watch you know.
But dont even try to tell me that nobody will say "Whoa, thats coool! How did they do that?"
That's when they start asking/listening ;-)
And listening is really a lot easier this year, since there'll be numerous lectures on TG in scene-stuff. It's not that scary when you're just listening as part of a group :-)
And no, nobody is forcing anyone to listen to the lectures dammit! ;-)

stefan:
I _know_ there will be fresh sceners, since I know most of them. and since it's my country's scene, and not your, I would know this better than you :P
hence, there will be a lot of fresh sceners this year.
and oh yeah, that also include a couple of converted/salvaged gamers.
how come you can't enjoy this as much as us, in stead of attacking us?

All I can say about this is: I like Mekka because of all the nice original ideas they have. I best liked the appearance of Maybebop (or was it with b?) in 1998 (right, uh?). It was a great time overall BUT(T) all these guys "listening" to loud music and the ones jamming the network with quake packets made me incredibly sick. There hadn´t been many of them but just two of these were enough to get on my nerves although they increased the price money for all the compos. For that reason (and because I don´t have the money to go to TG) I´ll probably never attend TG. I just can´t stand 2000 gamers in one place regardless of who is guilty of making TG go down or not.

deload: so you're afraid of gamers?

It seems that there's a chance for the norwegian scene to get back on its feet again.
I'm just happy that this thread have reached 105 posts. That's got to mean something (besides the fact that you people have no lives, that is :)..

<shamelessplug>
Seriously.. I hope to see as many sceners as possible attending this years TG. We'll have the demoscene-area for sceners only, we've held back tickets from the normal sales so that slow sceners still can get in, we'll have a one hour a day uplink to Nectarine, we'll have the cool cool Scenepardy (developed by Neon / Nocturnal, among others), phat prizes and plenty of cool compos.
</shamelessplug>

Come if you'd like, stay home or go to M&S if you feel like it, either way I'm pretty happy to know there is a serious upswing in the scene, worldwide, not just in Norway.

Peace out! :)

I am a living example that TG has indeed improved scenewise.

I attended first in '99, naively thinking I were attenting a scene-party. I guess there were some scene activity there, but I felt completely left out and lost in the mass of gaymers. I returned in '00 and '01 just to hang out with some friends, and to attend the fastcompo/fastmusic with horrible entries.

However, upon not getting a ticket this year, I stumbled upon #scene.no. This channel was practically filled with very inspiring scene people that both helped me get started on my first real scene release and helped me and my crew get tickets.

It seems to me that the scene area will be filled with such nice people this year, and that can't be too bad now can it?

I am sure there are a lot of people that can more easily get to TG than MS, so why not join us here at TG this year and try to make it worth something, scene-wise?

Seriously, with our own demoscene area, we really don't have to be bothered with too many gaymers do we?

Zionic: There was a demoscene area at TG99. In fact there were two: one for those Crusaders+friends+allies and for 'foreigners'. As to why one could get bothered by a majority of gamers: read the latest PAiN reports about TP2001. You *will* be bothered by too many gamers.

Anyway, last weekend I went to WOEST and had a superb time there. It was held in the same nuclear shelter where Ambience (demoparty gone gamer-ish) was held. It was small, informal and a healthy dose of oldskool fun. No matter how starry-eyed some people are about reconquering the old parites, the new small parties are (in my opinion) something to set goals for.

shifter: There was no demoscene-area at TG99, there was a
few rows that people among themselves decided to sit, and there was a VIP-area that the foreigners sat in, but nothing arranged on our part.. but we should have.

shifter2: I agree that the smaller scene-parties are really fun (I was at Kindergarden last year and it was fucking
awesome :) but they can't compare to the bigger ones... IF the big ones are good, that is. After all; we all went to smaller parties before (~1990 > 1997 was the big era for smaller scene-parties, although there are many now, it's a trend) but we STILL went to the bigger ones because that's where the biggest competitions and the most people were. Why? Because everything was cooler at bigger parties.. :)

I'm not saying that smaller parties suck (because they don't) and that big parties rule (because they don't :), but that both kinds of parties has their place, and that people shouldn't stick to just one kind - visit both, have a blast.. :)

Damn it, guys!
Let this topic rest in peace finally!
Everything has been said...and you all will just repeat yourself by adding more comments here! (as I'm at the moment as well! ;-))) )

Simply stick to the words of GLOOM (again)!
He's absolutely right (again) and got the point of the discussion here as well as some others...
Those who still don't want to accept or see what this should be all about...well, it's your 'problem' in the end!
But do me a favour and don't spread your 'anti-scene' spirit to any other (fresh) sceners to seed any more of those dumb rumours and images of so-called 'I-have-the-master-plan-of-what-a-party-has-to-feature-that-me-as-eliiiiite-sooooo-oldschool-scener-will -also-go-there!'-behaviour...

Simply ENJOY the scene your are living in...and stop 'blabbering' around if everything was said already! ;-)
Thanks for reading... ;-)
