American Demoscene

category: general [glöplog]
The intention of my original post was simply to see if there was anyone in my (semi local) area who was active in the demo scene since I'm trying to become active myself. I didnt intend for this to become some kind of pouet war. In the words of the famous rodney king (google him if you're not familiar) "Cant we all just get along!"

claus: not the whole prophet thing again. please, we had enough. you need to socialize more with the common people man, this is getting embarassing.
OK. But: What are "the common people"?

ppl are replying to you couz you're beeing annoying not trendy. step out of the plate already. participate in discussions not related to iq measurements and hugi diskmagazine for a change.
Well, I am participating in many discussions which originally are neither related to Hugi nor to IQ tests... I just tend to bring up these topics often when participating in a (random) discussion. It's simply that these are the two things I think about most of the time, and many postings involuntarily make me think of them. Meanwhile some other people even come up with Hugi in discussions themselves, they no longer need me :) (see e.g. http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=3114&page=1)

Jonk23: just grab the information you were given at the beginning of the thread and ignore the rest along with the idiots, the rantings, the pointless anti/pro american/canadian stuff etc. Be assured that Pouet trolls did not wait for you for thid kind of things.

Good luck with you demoscene projects :)

maybe you should convince all americans to join up on frappr as it's hard to find eachother otherwise?

Adok: and why do you think about the IQ tests for most of the time? I'm just curious.

Preacher: For one reason: There's one web forum in which I'm even more active than this one (much more active - maybe 10 times). It's http://www.mensa-aktiv.net/. So I involuntarily get reminded of my IQ all the time.

Maybe it's the right time to say it:
Don't get high on your own supply.

SRSLY: If you're wanking all the day for having a high IQ, then you're doing it wrong.
I meant more something along the lines of: What significance does your IQ have to you? And why do you post about it on pouet, because pouet isn't related in such discussion in any way.

for fuck sake adok, you are so socially blind it hurts. Ok, you just ignored my post in this thread by just focussing on the last bit.. but fuck that, not important.

Jonk: where in the US are you from? I'm going to the states in a month, so maybe we can have beers. This goes for all US sceners btw, I'm going from San Fransisco to New York, through Nevada, Utah and Colorado.. (we are cheating from there by flying to New York :))

You best meet up with Pyro when in SF - and tell him to get his ass to Breakpoint (:
Okkie: you rich traveling whore, make a stop in Montreal while you're there ;)

Jonk, unfortunately you weren't aware of the many past troll-filled "US demoscene" threads, otherwise you'd have known what this was going to turn into ;)

Yes, it's definitely hard to get started when you're not around like-minded individuals. The best advice is just to get going, do what you do. If you're a coder, get coding. If you're an artist, get arting. Keep in touch with people online.

So where are you anyway, and what do you do?

What am I?? Well, Im a programmer (been coding for about 8 years now). After I got my Comp Sci. degree in 2004 I went to work for a VR company as a programmer for about a year (I was laid off). I decided to move back home (to New Jersey) where I am now a programmer for a legal software company (nowhere near as exciting as VR but it pays a lot more). This leaves me with a bunch of free time at home to work on the more exciting aspects of programming (primarily graphics in OpenGL).

After discovering Demoscene.tv and this whole demoscene a few months ago I've been trying my best to get to know what its about and where its mainly popular. So, here I am in 2006 being amazed everyday by what you European coders, artists, and musicians do for "fun" and I'm trying my best to make my scratch (or dent) in the scene as well.

So, in short, who am I?? I'm a Cleo (Cancer/Leo) who likes programming, long walks on the beach, and sushi (go figure)

Oh god! Please tell you are *NOT* a carrot tanned guido!! please!

Preacher: Well, that's probably related to my development. For me the Scene has served for many years as _the_ place where there are more intelligent people than the ones with whom I had to share a seat in my classroom, and where there is more intellectual competition.

No....Im far from a guido (let alone carrot tanned).....my avatar should give me away.

As a matter of fact I doubted my IQ for some time because I've been interested in the demo scene for so long and still have never coded a demo. But meanwhile I've realized why I've never coded a demo: I'm simply not interested in such a venture.
added on the 2006-08-08 18:22:27 by Adok Adok
Adok well what would the demo be like you dont wanted to code? would it have got cool colours or just effects?
added on the 2006-08-08 18:30:38 by the_Ye-Ti the_Ye-Ti
the_Ye-Ti: Actually I've never had any idea what a demo should look like. That's the reason why I never felt the desire to code one.

However, I developed a couple of game ideas, and it was a dream of mine to implement them one day. Meanwhile this dream is weak though because most of the game principles aren't that innovative and I don't really feel the urge to invest much time on something that is not really groundbreaking. Therefore I've decided I'll aspire to do scientific research.
added on the 2006-08-08 18:46:31 by Adok Adok
adok if you come up with a great demo idea it is not be too hard to find groups willing to code it, my guess?
added on the 2006-08-08 18:49:12 by the_Ye-Ti the_Ye-Ti
Jon - okay, cool. You're a solo (for the moment) coder, so my suggestion is to start creating some 64k intros, where the emphasis is on the coding and overall design, rather than needing plenty of kickass assets. If you create something that looks decent or at least shows promise, that makes it much easier to approach established artists and musicians and ask if they'd like to work with you.

As far as finding people semi-local, my only suggestion is to just do random net searches for "new jersey demoscene". I'm not much help, I'm in Iowa :)

the_Ye-Ti: I'm not so sure about that. EP has published some nice ideas in Hugi, but I haven't noticed anybody implementing them?
added on the 2006-08-08 19:19:33 by Adok Adok
That's probably because EPs ideas totally stink, and few people read Hugi anyway anymore.

That said, there are always lots of great demo ideas. I have dozens. There's just the lack of time or interest to implement them.
