Coders: what hardware are you using?
category: general [glöplog]
shifter: I haven't decided on a title yet, "The cost of democoding" is to be considered as WIP, especially since I made a point of saying:
What I _should_ have done was to specify that I'm really only interested in hearing about _PC machine specs_, not Ataris and Amigas. :)

I don't think that definition is very ambiguous. :)specifically; what kind of hardware is required to run todays demos.

..and, realtime, apparently, to weed out the trolls.
Dell Laptop, 2.8ghz, 4gig ram geforce 6800 mobile.
Core duo 6600, 7600GT, 2 GB ram

How discriminatory. :P Anyway, when I am not watching Desert Dream on my A500 :D I'm using an AMD XP2800+ with a good old Radeon 9800 and 1.5GB ram which still runs most of the demos fine. :)
StingRay: Atari/Amiga-hardware doesn't have that many variables, and besides; this was always ment to be a PC-related article. :)
Core 2 duo 3300, radeon x1950 pro, 1GB (should double this soon)
Gloom: I know ;)
ok, seriously then.
Currently sitting in front of a 1,5GHz Centrino, 1GB RAM, Mob. Radeon X600 - 64MB RAM thingie

as for the laptop:
Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, geforce 7600Go, 1GB, 160 GB HDD

My overall impression is that a lot of demos already make use of SM2.0 while few actually use SM3.0. I'm quite happy with that (got no SM3.0), but SM3.0 or DX10 shaders (geometry shaders) will really be pretty standard stuff in ~a year or so even in integrated chipsets and will be more heavily used in the future... ...meaning that a decent 2-3GHz, 1GB PC with a SM2.0 capable card (128MB+) will suffice. for now.
And today you need a fast CPU to be able to run all those old Demos in DOSBox ;)

my shared-with-a-roommate comp's specs are :
- Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad Core QX6800 2.93 Ghz.
- XFX GeForce 8800 GTX XXX edition 768mb
- 2gb ddr2 ram
and we had to work in a damn laundry shop for 1,5 months and never and never spent that money on anything else, this babe costed us a small fortune but damn the only thing it can't run at full speed currently is just Plastic demos...

smash... what "divorce" are you talking about? :) HE is my room and school mate :D. btw, it's likely that i'll get the machine, since i payed 100 euros more than him ha!
As long as you have enough memory in the machine, a programmer is satisfied. Sure it is nice to draw more polygons or do somthing a bit faster but it's not essential, lack of memory however can make me aggressive.
shrimp: Actually I believe that the "polygon-race" was over years ago, and pixelshader-strength is now the dominant factor.
gloom : true indeed :)
decipher: nah, im kidding. :) (you should have signed a prenup though! ;) )
Amiga:
1.3 A500, 2.04 A500+, 3.0 A1200, 3.1 A1200+Blizzard 030@50Mhz
PC:
Athlon XP 3200+, 1Gig Ram, ATI Radeon 9800XT 256Mb, XP SP2
This runs 99.9% of Demo's at a speed i'm happy with. Only thing i can't view really is the ps3.0 demos.

Athlon 3200, Radeon 9800 (yes, ps2.0 only), 1 GB. But I plan to inmeditelly change to dual core amd + nv8800 so that I can watch my own productions.
A64 3200+ 7900GTO + 1 go ram + XP SP2 (willbe soon updated)
like other said i think there is nothing worse than having no more memory and computer swapping :( (the more funny part is when ur demo running is changing scene , swapping a long time and you miss da kick ass effect)
before of this i was having only 512 ddr ram , (2go pack from a stupid website never arrived ) and just after (july 2006) ddr2 and core 2 duo came , i was disgusted and dont want to invest into 2go of ddr1 since it was already "outdated"
i can explain how painfull it is to run debris on a such config, now i finnaly go to 1go
