Your GPA

category: residue [glöplog]
This comment has made me wonder... What's your GPA?

My GPA at medical school was 2.6, where 1.0 would have been the best possible score and 4.0 the worst possible score that would have still allowed me to graduate.

At computer science school my GPA on the same scale as before was 1.9 (Bachelor's degree) and 1.7 (Master's degree) respectively.

Navis: that's the german way. in the US you also have an "A" grade as the best one.

And this thread is Adok's way of saying: hey, look at me, i'm a genious with high IQ and you are all inferior. Please applaud at my intelect!

And you already know my bachelor's GPA, Adok, since you so successfully read my CV on my website. Still angry that I got better marks than you?

xTr1m: Not at all. I pity you for spending so much time learning and trying to do everything in a perfect way. You won't be honored for that.

I rather like to relax and enjoy life instead of being other people's servant.

And you got into Mensa with those marks Adok?

Sure, why not? There are loads of very bad students among Mensa members. You seem to have a wrong picture of Mensa.

My grades in the Master's programme are according to my own calculations (I'm going to get the certificate in a couple of weeks):

Algorithms and Complexity: excellent (1)
Logic, Mathematics, and Theoretical Computer Science: good (2)
Knowledge Representation and Artificial Intelligence: satisfactory (3)

A subject named Programming Languages and Verification has also been a part of the curriculum, but I hardly took any courses in it. Anyway, the grade for this subject will also be excellent (1). Same for the elective subjects. For the Master's thesis I got good (2), so this makes a GPA of 1.7.

I just wanted to show you what things I focused on during my studies (apart from girls and stuff). I did not take any courses in computer graphics, embedded systems, distributed systems, networks or such fancy stuff. I did not take any courses in advanced software engineering either, I only took some basic software engineering courses during my Bachelor studies. These three subjects I listed here were the main focuses of my studies and my grades correspond very well with the degrees of interest I had in them. When I talked to a professor about my interests in computer science as I was applying for a position as a PhD student in his group, he said: "But that is what computer science was like 50 years ago!" Well, he might be right... yet I did the Master's degree primarily for fun and so, whenever possible, I chose the courses that matched my own interests.

Ok, I'll bite - there's gotta be something entertaining in this.
320 on my first TEE. Not great but drink, girls and drugs kinda got in the way!
It was 8 marks short of getting into the uni course I wanted to so I went back the next year.
Didn't even finish.

About 3 years later after a lot of working and fun I did my STAT - 2 hours out of my life and a score of about 415.

Haven't finished any of the degrees I've started. Might do my BEd in the next year or 2.

My mum tried to get me to go to Mensa when I was a kid - it was boring. Judo was heaps more fun!

ringofyre: Interesting! I did not know these Australian tests of education and academic skills. In Austria (the country that has no kangaroos) we have nothing even remotely comparable to that.

Regarding Mensa, you must really understand that it is a club which anybody can join provided that he/she has scored IQ > 130 (SD 15) on _some_ standardized IQ test. It is not an academic honor society or a society of top students at all. You may lead a life like a tramp, watch TV all day, take drugs, and learn nothing - if you take a IQ test and score > 130, you may join Mensa! There is a great variety of people in the club. Basically organizing a Mensa meeting is like inviting a bunch of random people you once met in the street to a cup of coffee. The great thing about that is that you learn to deal with people even if you do not have much in common with them. Of course it is difficult for somebody like me to get on with someone who did not take school seriously, dropped out after the 9 mandatory school years we have in Austria, never studied at university, generally lacks education and works as a waiter in a restaurant. There are people like this among Mensa members. But the good thing is that it shows you there is not just one way of life, one set of values etc., but that there are very different lifestyles and views and all of them are equally fine.

that means you're worthless. >130 but does nothing for society. make it somebody can use it. you ever worked on something real in a team that could change something, being a lil more then theoretical things. i mean... come on. all your math and algorithm shit should be more then just a twisting knot in your head.
