Cool demo! I like more synchro but... a good production.

pretty good demo, some very cool elements, but unfortunately ruined by stuttering audio-playback - DON'T USE FMOD!
added on the 2003-11-02 18:21:51 by gloom gloom
This has so much going for it. Well designed scenes, especially the opening scene. But the music ruins it for me. It kills the impact of the demo that it has such a bad (read: Boring) soundtrack. Looking 4ward to see more from you guys.

Good! Very nice art and modeling. Some interesting code aswell, but as said above, the experience is kind of ruined by the noised sound and lack of sync. The soundtrack itself i suppose was kind of okay

Yes, a lot of potential wasted, but actually, it's still pretty good.

i liked the music actually
rulez added on the 2003-11-02 18:38:53 by Gargaj Gargaj
very good start, but, i agree with the people opinions, the music have no enough level. (Come on spanish musicians!!)

It mostly ran like shit on my setup, even on the lowest settings. The music sounded ok, but didn`t seem to fit the visuals.

It did look quite nice, although everything was a bit too blurred.

Reboots my system after the scene with the red cylinder in the centre. Next time, please warn us about your poor coding skills so that I can save my work before running your demo.

nah :(
actually the demo starts very promising, but after a moment it became really boring, not only because of the boring soundtrack, imho there is also too much fog/noice in the whole demo...
with another soundtrack this could have been something :/

i won't be original...
really fine for everything but... change that music! ;)

gloom: exactly, what in the hell has an established well-featured and fully functional audio library like FMOD to do with the playback problems as encountered in this production? next time, say something smarter :)

not going to run this now, perhaps another time :)
added on the 2003-11-02 22:58:05 by superplek superplek
plek, i have encountered quite a few demos using fmod that had stuttering problems.. Maybe the audio buffers are set too low? (why would a demo require low latency audio is beyond me)
added on the 2003-11-02 23:00:06 by _-_-__ _-_-__
that's probably the problem at hand. cheap/crappy or completely batshit insane soundcards usually trip over small soundbuffers.

(plek used to scold me for using my digi card for demos, since it would chop like a lawnmower unless he upped the soundbuffer).
added on the 2003-11-02 23:08:32 by Shifter Shifter
it's just a matter of balancing really :)

plek: actually fmod is the audio-playback system most people have problems with, you dutch know-it-all (who doesn't like beer, yeah, that's right people! ..oh, and he's also gay.. and visits his mother every sunday (after church))

..or something to that effect. :)
added on the 2003-11-03 01:23:27 by gloom gloom
Except for one demo with a really buggy player I never had stuttering sound in a demo or intro. And my SB card is also only a SB16 clone.

plek: fmod doesn't give you and accurate timer. a 40hz timer is qute bad, and you can't really rely on QueryPerformanceTimer to be in sync with the audioplayback due to poor soundcards and/or drivers. Besides, I have had lot of troubles with fmod (computer-crashes in some modules on some fmod-versions etc, stuff running out of sync etc).

Fmod is not very good for demos. However, for games and such, I believe that fmod is one of the better alternatives. For demos, I prefer bassmod for modules and the ogg/vorbis libs + directsound for streamed music.

So... gloom is basicly right about the "DONT USE FMOD"-part. However, I didn't hear anything wrong with the music, but then again I'm not a musician.

Args, sorry about the Radeon problem. We had no Radeons to test with :(. Please send details to " us AT rgba DOT org", and we'll try to fix that as soon as possible. Just a wild guess, did you try to run the demo in a resolution other than 640x480?
added on the 2003-11-03 09:19:02 by utopian utopian
nice demo, but the soundtrack is somewhat weak.
I had no problem with FMOD, and used it for some prods/tests (FMOD, miniFMOD, FMOD CE) w/o problem... but i heard so much complaints i'm starting to get suspicious... (and i'm still no musician :))
(...tho the only release we got actually problems about music playback was the one that used direct-crap instead of FMOD :)) )
rulez added on the 2003-11-03 11:24:32 by FooLman FooLman
kusma: i would only agree with "don't use fmod the way you do", you see :)

(and since when did i stop drinking beer and let the great love of Jesus into my life?, i've been waiting for that moment quite a while now! :-))

I liked the opening scene but I didn't quite get how the rest had to do with that.. felt like a bunch of non-connected scenes or something.. dunno.. nice work anywas!
added on the 2003-11-03 13:31:23 by violator violator
I liked specially the nice (but very appropiate) effects. They seem like photography techniques - so great. But that music made me feel down... it first looks like it is getting lots of energy but then stops and makes the rhythm down ... what a pity!
The overall impression is: GREAAAT!! (I knew rgba was going to win since the first time I saw the demo at the jury hall).
Guay! XDDD

Not my style, but definitely a lot of work went into making it, and it creates an atmosphere. Although not spectacular in any particular section, it's a good demo alltogether. Good job.

To the radeon users: there's a light of hope. We have managed to make the demo work at least on one Radeon :). We'll try to make sure it works on a few more cards before releasing a patch, but... why on earth would it crash using render to texture to a 512x512 window but not to a 512x256 one? Any hint?

I have just noticed that ATI has released new drivers (catalyst 3.9). Could anyone with a Radeon 9500,9600,9700,9800 please test the demo and see if it still crashes? There must be some driver bug there, since the machine reboots, and they might have fixed that. Thx :)

Good news for radeon users! Just tested the party version on a radeon 9600 pro with the very latest Catalyst drivers (4.1) and it doesn't crash anymore! If anyone else with a similar configuration can confirm it we would be grateful.

A few things need to be sorted out before the final version is ready (some slowdowns on radeons, fmod issue on some configurations, final linux support...), so stay tuned.

Good. I like the little touch of fading out instead of simply hard exiting on escape, BTW (I tried it in 640x480 first, but figured it would look a lot better in 1024x768) ;-) Pity about the extreme loading delays/hangs between the scenes, though.
rulez added on the 2004-05-16 14:32:57 by Sesse Sesse
Oh, and by the way: You appear to have major problems with your RTT code with ATI on Linux (FireGL drivers with Radeon 9600 Pro, same thing as Nuclear's reporting), no matter the resolution or fullscreen/windowed. It seems weirdly stretched or something, which more or less makes the demo unviewable. :-)
added on the 2004-05-16 19:16:43 by Sesse Sesse
More OBTWs: Try adding "-Wl,-rpath ." to your linking stage, then you won't have to mess with lancher scripts and such.

Yeah.. fading out on escape is a nice touch.. we used it on eon as well.. but why on earth would you press Escape while watching rgba??? Sweet demo

Nuclear, sesse, we are aware of that linux+radeon problem. I am not very sure if it is our fault or the driver's, but we will have a look... Anyway, it's pretty strange that it works on windows but not on linux.
added on the 2004-05-17 13:53:05 by utopian utopian
utopian: I believe plain glCopyTexSubImage2D() is broken in the latest FireGL drivers. You may want to use pbuffers instead -- they're more flexible and faster as well. Drop me an e-mail if you need working code :-)
added on the 2004-05-18 18:54:32 by Sesse Sesse
sesse: thanks. We already have pbuffers working, but only for windows :). I guess it's time to start porting it... Anyway, that works ok with my Radeon 9600 Pro...

About the all-white problem, I have some good news. If I recompile some parts of the demo using my own machine instead of the one we used, that problem dissapears :). Could be an OpenGL library thing (Mesa vs. ATI proprietary !?). Anyway, we will probably release a fix for that soon.
