- Thanks for the support, guys! :) I had also mentally prepared to say on stage that I've been an Instanssi-goer for 10 years and it gnawed me that I never had the time and resolve to make an Instanssi demo. This was Mehu's first Instanssi demo, in fact, so I'm happy about that.

- Myopic rendering :D But jokes aside, the DoF effect is a nice touch. Very nice 4k!

- I hated making the content for this, and I'm starting to realize that making a demo out of obligation doesn't make good art. Multiple reasons: 1) royalty-free/CC/PD music is not to my taste usually. It's too "soundtrack-y" for a demo. 2) I had planned this demo to also serve as a testbench for my master's thesis topic, and now I had done myself dirty by associating the creative work with the boring university work. 3) In a rush to make sure I get this done before Instanssi, I occasionally used my Gemini LLM subscription "for inspiration and faster development". I now realize that it fucking sucks because it takes the joy out of being an artist and ruins the some of the satisfaction that you get from doing good engineering work and coming up with solutions by yourself.
However, I loved making the engine for this, and I will keep using and improving the same Zig and SDL3 codebase, it's a keeper. Just need to take a few months break from making demos so that I can graduate and get a mental reset from this stressful project. - isokadded on the 2026-03-01 20:07:16

- Blog post alert!
This was a pipe cleaner for my current demo engine project. I like SDL3 GPU API and will probably stick with it. However, I had to port my existing SDL3 codebase from Rust to Zig, because it's hard to ignore how much nicer Zig is for rapid 3D engine code development and how simple it is to just use proven, minimal C libraries directly without any broken abstraction or unsafe-blocks everywhere. The Zig engine is even better, actually, because the render configuration is processed and validated mostly at compile time from ZON, and not parsed at runtime from RON. Combined with dynlib reloading and zig build --watch, it's a very neat workflow where I can develop shaders and render code live, without having to restart the demo executable or even manually invoke any compiler(s).
The visuals here are kind of half-baked. I was aiming for a much lower frequency and slighly lower contrast background 2D effect, but this plasma shader was all I had time for now. The octahedra also need more variation and pattern(s), expect to see more of that effect down the line. The sync was done with just conditionals in render/shader code, and if I had more time, there should have been something else at the end than just sticking with the "main effect".
The zip file also contains an aarch64-linux-gnu -build, which will probably run on a Raspberry Pi 5 pretty well, but I haven't confirmed that, so no Raspberry Pi platform tag this time. - isokadded on the 2025-09-02 10:13:50

- Very polished, I like this style of demos. I was thinking that the blob could have been actually reflective by sampling some cubemap render target, though.

- I aspire to have a decent looking demo making pipeline as efficient as you. The end screen reference deseves a thumbs up.
