- I'm fed up with nostalgia pandering in PC demos.
Which makes it even more impressive that I love this demo so much. But it's doing so many things right that others don't.
First, the premise just fits. A 40 years group anniversary is _the_ occasion to pull on those Xennial heartstrings - and it comes from a genuine place. It's not some cheap faux-school attempt, it's an honest reminiscence, and that alone elevates it miles above the usual unprompted boing ball you see so often.
And then all the details are just right. Pretty much all the typography is proper PETSCII/ASCII/ANSI, with the right fonts, the right palettes, the right techniques, the right UI and beloved tools from each platform, and a visible love for the medium and the culture around it. And when it deviates from "canon", it's done with artistic intent. This alone is enough to raise the bar for this kind of demo for hopefully the next decades to come. Right? ... right? O.O
But then it goes on. That soundtrack. The way it switches from SID to Amiga to AdLib to modern production, each one again done just right, and then mixes it all up and goes extra hard, and all of this while staying true to its melancholic nature with those lyrics and those 80s and Futurepop vibes. The way it's doing all that and still gets to be an instant earworm.
And as if that's not enough already, all of it is wrapped in (almost) impeccable direction. It keeps throwing thing after thing at you, but all of it makes sense narratively, and the motion graphics and transitions, as detailed and overwhelming as they sometimes seem, act as a guide through the eras. You may lose track of everything that's happening right now, but the emotional and story beats always hit.
My one point of criticism would be the last "act" where it goes newschool. You can feel the visuals running out of steam a bit. It's still good but the effects and transitions lack some of the polish and momentum that the previous acts had, and that fact clashes with the music going into full-on mode at the same time.
But that's a pretty minor nitpick in the grand scheme of things. The whole production just oozes love and dedication, and has an emotional quality that only very few demos are able to reach.
And also all those fake endings and including your PC's desktop in the right places - *chef's kiss*. - rulezadded on the 2026-04-16 19:11:27

- Crazy good, and for what it's worth, IMO the subject matter fits that Kubrick/Anderson style of composition well. :)

Not a new synth I'm afraid :) That's stock V2 (as far as I know), and BoyC and Slyspy were just kind enough to give me a full credit. - isokadded on the 2025-09-21 13:14:53

- My inner graphics programmer kinda agrees with Gargaj here but my inner ambient demo enjoyer and especially my inner synth coder can't just not love this. Absolutely fantastic track, especially when listened to with headphones where all the details come out.
That said, the way this intro was shown at Evoke was basically the worst case scenario (not blaming anyone in particular here, everyone involved knows what went wrong), and it should probably have ranked higher. So I'm joining the "keep it up" bandwagon :) - rulezadded on the 2025-08-21 18:57:02
