- demo MS-Dos cage by MovSD [web]
- I am the author of this "demo". Sorry for releasing it! :-)
One of the reasons it got made was to test whether a dull coder-designed demo would score high in the compo if it ticked the right boxes (decent 3D engine, TrueColor, cheesy disco music, flashy effects, randomly-picked Chinese characters). I never took it seriously and was slightly ashamed of it even back then, which is why we used the bogus "Zirkon" demo group name instead of "MovSD". But somehow, it worked too well. It won the compo, relegating Zden's piece-of-art demo (Minimal, still one of my favourites) to 4th place. Sorry, Zden!
I hope you might at least enjoy what Redox^MovSD wrote about this demo in 2000:
"Cage is a strange demo. Shakul himself considers it a soulless piece of crap. But gradually, he comes to recognize the symbols he unwittingly introduced into it. It's interesting to see the scenes such as being enclosed in a cage of illusions of the world of 3D engines, flying over the cemetery of the Czech demoscene, or the walking doll, which evokes the figure of the author himself and his clumsy style of walking. The demo won the Demobit party for very different reasons, to be sure. In a way, the first place in the compo confirmed the old truth about the shallowness of the audience, who evaluate mainly the perceived complexity of a project, without looking into any depth. The audience's philosophy is 'what's 3D is good'. This trend, in fact, has persisted in the demoscene to this day, when the creation of 3D engines has become a worldwide hobby."
But don't take Redox too seriously. I think he was just trying to be nice and rationalize this crap's existence. By the way, the author of the music considered it crap as well. He was into hard metal. And the textures are not even bilinear filtered! ;-) - isokadded on the 2024-06-28 14:32:48
- 4k Windows 4k Delphi intro is POSSiBLE! by Migeel [web]
- what is the point of demoscene? is it to downvote newcomers who dare to release some interesting hack on a small local party before perfecting their skills?
basically, the author of this intro quit the scene because of the off-putting comments here. over the years he perfected his skills and went on to become one of the top coders working on .net, but he never dared to release any other intro. - rulezadded on the 2023-09-06 15:45:14

- crs: Well, I actually cooled down a bit by now, but i still can't understand why all three of my completely unoriginal an definitely not innovative te2-rb/bakkslide7 ripoffs got your thumb ups and this got a thumb down... It really smells like a reverse name-voting to me.
Maybe I wouldn't have been so angry at you if you just said "I am only thumbing this down because too many people thumbed it up and I don't think it deserves so much praise" :-)
And I don't get the "dentro" part of your post at all. Does it fit the rules of the "demo" category? It does, therefore it is a demo. Period. - isokadded on the 2007-04-11 18:44:22

- While watching this at the party, I felt like I did the first time I saw Second Reality many years ago. Totally stunned! Everything good has already been said about this here. And unlike Second Reality, this actually isn't overrated at all! There are several minor things in this that could have been done better which I don't even dare to mention, but I almost believe that all of those were actually planted deliberately, because otherwise this demo would have been the perfection itself, there would be no need to make any more demos and the whole demoscene would just end instantly! So, many thanks for saving the scene for us!
And now a message for crs who dared to have the arrogance to thumb this down:
I did expect this will inevitably get a thumbdown or two, but I would never have guessed it would be you, a member of my own group! I was horrified when I was reading what you wrote. Sure, it is OK to dislike this demo if you feel that way. But come on, this product deserves a hundred thumb ups just for the camera or the file size alone, even if you absolutely and utterly hate everything else about it! But the main problem I have with your critique is that I am pretty sure that if this was not a Farbrausch product, you would never ever think about thumbing it down, not even for a single second. If it was me who made a demo like this, it would be an instant thumb-up from you, and don't even try to deny it! You made me angry and sad today. - rulezadded on the 2007-04-10 02:14:21
