- Thanks for the comments everyone! I didn't expect this intro to be very popular, because the difficulty in the effect is hard to appreciate if you haven't coded fluid dynamics yourself.
The basic technique is explained in my 4K seminar here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ8eB_FORLo, with example code finally available here: http://www.fulcrum-demo.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Reversing_Entropy_Seminar_by_Seven_Fulcrum.zip
To get it working with fluid dynamics, I had to modify the pipeline a lot to balance memory requirements, GPU power and pipeline length. But you can never get it working perfectly, unlike the fire/water examples in the seminar, so I had to hide some hiccups with creative choice of scenes. So, no actual reverse solver was used, Noobody :)
The content is minimalistic, because I only got the music a few days before the party, and for the longest time I didn't knew if it would fit in 4K or not. And when the music turned out not to fit in a 4K, there wasn't enough time to add bells and whistles to make it a full 8K... - isokadded on the 2014-05-05 22:49:44

- A surprise compo entry, the topic was: "This app can't open. The screen resolution is too low for 'Music' to run." I aimed for a 1K but decided to enjoy the party instead.

- Great demo, fantastic style.
Comments from my 3-years old watching this:
Look, there's fire! I think it's broken? Maybe the house was old? I'm going to put my hands on my ears because the fire is noisy. Look, do you see the holes? That was a short demoparty. - rulezadded on the 2013-08-19 13:07:11

- As a Belgian, I am required to thumb this up. At least something positive from the whole circus :)

- AntDude: well, drivers that old do not allow some things that current drivers allow, and that are crucial for getting below 4K. I could make a bigger-than-4K safe version, but I'm currently busy trying to make something for Assembly... So I hope you can just watch the YouTube version, if you want to see it again.

- AntDude: are your drivers up-to-date? I've tested it on a 7850, but it doesn't do anything advanced, just basic raymarching, so it should work on older hardware too. I'm using Catalyst 13.1. If you have the same or higher drivers, let me know and I can get you a version that dumps the GLSL compiler log.

- Thanks all! About the music: it was made on short notice and El Blanco is very busy, so I'm really glad he could help me out with this nice waltzy tune. It was also made to loop, but I didn't have room nor time to actually made it so in the executable, hence the sudden stop.

- demotool Windows Crinkler by Loonies [web] & TBC
- Hey Mentor and/or Blueberry,
I'm trying to make a 4K in VS2012 Express with the XP-compatible linker flag (platform toolset = Visual Studio 2012 - Windows XP (v110_xp), instead of the default Visual Studio 2012 (v110) ), and crinkler 1.4 does not like that:
1>LINK : error : cannot parse token '/SUBSYSTEM:WINDOWS,5.01': unknown argument WINDOWS,5.01
Would it be possible to fix this, preferably before Revision? - rulezadded on the 2013-03-23 16:10:38
- invitation Windows MacOSX Intel This is Revision by Danish Underpants Brigade
- Yep, it's there (after installing VS2012 update 1). I've only recently jumped to 2012 Express (from VS6 /o\ ) and I was just looking up exactly that error after I gave one of my own tools to someone else. Trying to run your demo on my old PC (as that one is still connected to the speakers) helped me a lot finding the problem, as it was the first time I saw that error message. So thanks for that!

- First, great invitro with spot-on jokes!
Second, I learned something new today: applications compiled by Visual Studio 2012 do not run on Windows XP by default ("ThisIsRevision.exe is not a valid Win32 app"), unless you install update 1 and specify you want your programs to be XP-compatible.
From the horse's mouth: set the Platform Toolset property to Visual Studio 2012 – Windows XP (v110_xp).
Seems a small change to support an old platform. (I'm only running it on my secondary PC, on Win7 the demo ran fine).
